I brought the family in for lunch here during the holidays and was pretty disappointed -- most notably with the service -- from the start. The place was maybe 25% full, but for some reason it took us a while to be seated and at least 15 more minutes to place our order. When I did hail down our waitress, I took her curt "Yes. I'll be with you in a minute." as if I had been asking for spare change. Things continued from there, and at the end of the meal I had to go hunt down the manager in order to pay our bill. The food was fine - we had a mix of rice bowls and sushi - and acceptably priced. In fairness, my family has been here a few times before and reported better experiences on those occasions. Bottom line: one of those places that I wouldn't mind returning to if someone else is planning, but I won't be selecting myself.

I went here for lunch and I can say the food was EH.... the tempura was nicely battered though! The salad dressing was salty and tasted like bad thousand island. The sushi didn't taste spectacular or anything... Also, parking sucks here.

Sushi? 'Tis simple enough. Ate quite a bit, was satisfied. Sounds like a lot of people felt they were slipping, but without any basis point, I felt fine about it.

Okay... the boat is fun for kids but the sushi is way overpriced for what you get. Quality is like miyakes on university. Ambience and service are unimpressive. The sushi rice was a bit too sour for my taste Fine enuf for neighborhood joint.

My family and I have been very loyal to Sushi Tomo (on El Camino Way) for many years. I even made my co-workers (the birthday club at work) come here for every birthday celebration. I always thought the food was not great, but the price is decent and it's close by work. I never liked the head waitress though, she is not very friendly and even looks mean most of the time. Tonight, I gave one of my son's teachers a ride home because it was raining and this old man was going to take the bus home. He lives near Castro Street in Mountain View. After dropping him off, I thought to eat dinner out with my son since my husband is out of town. We could have chosen any restaurant on Castro Street, but instead, I drove all the way to Sushi Tomo. The business was slow. When that waitress brought our check, I asked for a small box and a little teriyaki sauce to go for my son's leftover chicken. She said "we charge extra for the sauce." I said "Are you serious? How much?" She replied "50 cents." That didn't make me very happy because what's the big deal about giving me a little sauce? So I said "forget it." To rub it in, she added "normally we charge for the box, but I am giving it to you for free." For God's sake, to-go boxes are part of a restaurant business! At that point, I was really upset for her rudeness. I will never go back to that restaurant again. So-so quality food + cheap price (by reducing the quantity) is not worth the bad attitude from the waitress. I will take my family and co-workers to a different place from now on. She was trying to save 50 cents, but lost a whole lot more!

I found myself in here today and enjoyed a very quick bite for lunch. I sat myself down at the bar. Sushi boats floating by me one after the other. 1st grab: Cali rolls 2nd grab: Tekka 3rd grab: Pot stickers 4th grab & BEST grab: 2 mini chocolate ECLAIRS!!! Yeah, this was just as much a shock to me! Couldn't believe my eyes. I even smiled a little when I saw that little magical boat floating towards me. How did they know I had a sweet tooth? That's amazing! They are freaking psychic! I just love little moments like these! What can I say...I'm easily amused.

We reluctantly came in over because Fresh Taste AND Tofu House were closed that day. We sat at the sushi boat section just to see the things zip by and since a few of us wanted to pick out one of the floatin' things to try, along with one of the bento sets. Tasteless thick tempura batter that had hardened and cooled around undercooked vegetables about a minute after the bento got to our table. The California rolls were dry and crusty, but the worst was that the sushi rice was really really off. No lightness or airiness from the vinegar/sugar balance, but it was just sour. Ew. Avoid.

Sushi did not taste fresh AT ALL. In fact the tuna was stinking, no jokes. I would give them 0 stars if I could. The only reason this place is running is cause its in the middle of PA downtown. Never going back!

We went here Saturday evening with a friend to grab a quick bite to eat per her recommendation. When it comes to sushi, I'm a fiend, and as I hadn't tried this place before, I decided to give it a shot. I can't say I was particularly impressed. I had a variety of uramaki, hosomaki, and nigiri. The rolls were falling apart when I reached for them, and that turned me off, for I ended up picking at the various "stuffings" (so to speak) whilst chewing on a simple piece of nori and rice. Also, the california roll was far to big for one bite, and it is Japanese tradition to eat the whole roll in one bite as respect to the chef's masterpiece. I had kappa (cucumber), avocado, and california rolls. Neither impressed me, though I guess you get what you pay for. As for the nigiri, I had tamago (egg), maguro (tuna) and sake (salmon). The tamago was good, usually is anywhere you go. The fish was cut too thick, and it did not taste fresh. Additionally, within ten minutes of us being there, we ran out of tea, and there was no way to get the attention of any of the three servers. There were about 12-15 people in the restaurant at the time, with two chefs working at the bar... It wasn't until we were almost finished that we managed to get the attention of someone to get more tea and water... Lastly, and what left a bitter taste, was the guy who ran my check card. I was not at all impressed with the meal, and though I only paid $19.35 for it, I would have been more content with spending that money at the nearby Whole Foods for REAL crab california rolls... Upon signing my receipt, the guy told me that I wasn't leaving any tip, and that I must write it in... I thought a customer left tip when they were satisfied, not as a rule. So, needless to say, I rounded it up to $20, but got my point across. Next time I am in the mood for quick sushi, I'll go to Whole Foods or Sono Sushi on Castro St.

This was one of the first sushi places I ate at when I moved to California. It's like a dive sushi bar. The atmosphere is very plain but the food is good and cheap. I always order the salmon sashimi and 3-4 different rolls. The service is ok. If you're looking for a sushi place that won't empty your wallet, I'd go here. menu: I tried to find a menu but kept getting directed to a place in Pittsburgh

The gyoza (potstickers) with sauce is excellent. I would not recommend either the teriyaki salmon or the teriyaki chicken because the sauce is very gelatinous. If you want teriyaki, try Mikado in Los Altos or Fuki Sushi on El Camino. Good prices though if you want cheap Japanese.

  • Chorty P.

This place is a decent place to go to lunch with your coworkers. Cheap combo's and decent food. I can't talk about the freshness of the fish, as I tend do order vegetable udon and california rolls (hard to go wrong on these two). Only thing that I don't like is that the service is always very slow here, so make sure you don't have a meeting scheduled for after lunch because you probably won't make it!

Decently priced but don't have that quality I usually look for in sushi, sashimi, or nigiri.

  • Suany W.

I feel weird giving Sushi Tomo even three stars after seeing the copious amount of negative reviews. But really, it's a great-priced neighborhood sushi joint that's good for ordering to-go. While I love sashimi, I tend to stick to the "safer" roll options and tempura on their menu. They are pretty stingy with the soy sauce - several times I've taken my order home only to discover that they've only given me two tiny packets of Kikkoman for two densely packed large styrofoam boxes of sushi.

  • Dannah S.

Aaw :( Why the bad reviews? Ventured in on a whim. The girlfriend and I sampled most of their specialty rolls, and they were very good. They have the same specialty rolls as other sushi places, BUT their sushi is VERY FRESH. Keep in mind that this isn't a five-star sushi place, they however do serve fresh sushi. This is my first visit to the place, and I will update again once I return. The sushi were very good. I'm really happy to have found a cheap, good quality sushi in the Palo Alto area. :)

The Chinese in me got super excited when I saw the menu. Lunch specials starting at $6.50...in Palo Alto? Hells yeah! I quickly remembered that this was a sushi place. Cheap could be bad, very bad. But, the Chinese in me prevailed so I ordered the $7.50 bento box. It came with salmon teriyaki, tempura, AND sashimi. The salmon teriyaki and tempura were below average. The salmon sashimi sucked. The first piece tasted flavorless and icy as if they had just pulled it out of the freezer. The second piece was just gross tasting. I totally got stung here thanks to genetics! Ouch.

  • Plato W.

Get off your high horses. This is a great sushi value. Tempura is a tad on the oily side. Otherwise, it's fine for what it is.

  • Amy T.

Overall, the sushi tastes good, it's fresh, and the price is great, especially for a sushi lunch. However, when a coworker of mine asked if she could substitute a tuna roll for the California roll in the sushi lunch due to an allergy with avocado, they said no, no substitutions. I understand the need to be quick and efficient, but this day and age no substitutions for allergies is just absurd.

Sushi is cheap but the place is filthy looking. Midway eating my sushi, I saw a small bunch of finely thin hair on the sushi plate. Ew. I called the waiter on it and he refunded me on that particular item. I will come back.

I used to go to Sushi Tomo every week when I worked nearby because the bento box was a great deal. The food is good, but not great. The service is severely lacking. There was one day that aside from the waitress giving my friend something she definitely didn't order (she was given sushi and she was very obviously pregnant!), our water wasn't refilled once, and we were waiting so long to get our bill that we finally had to ask for it at the front. I got chased out the door by what I think was the manager asking why I gave such a low tip. I felt like I was being accosted! Aren't tips supposed to be discretionary? I'm normally a very generous tipper, but I'm not going to give someone something for nothing. I explained to him about the lack of service, but that was embarrassing! Ever since then I haven't gone back.

  • Barn M.

This place is absolutely disgusting! I couldn't even get myself to rest my hands on the table because they stunk so much. Everything was just filthy and unclean. I don't think anyone should drag him/herself here even if the food were free, but if you really want to experience a bad restaurant, at least remember to bring along a gallon of purell. The city ought to have a law that bans bad restaurants. I wish there were a way to press charges against this place for their disgusting and unsanitary conditions. This is simply completely unacceptable, and it's a total disgrace to the city and Japanese restaurants. To make matters worse, service is nonexistent. Not only bad, but nonexistent. I don't understand how this place hasn't been raided by health officials, or sued for making people sick. The bottom line is, if you wanna live, just don't come here.

  • Vincent C.

Just stick with a sashimi-less bento box and you'll be fine.

Came in with my family once coz we were Sushi craving. Never again. The sushi you could buy pre-packed in Safeway probably tastes better than this. Then again, for the price, you can't really expect much out of them. Something about their crabmeat in their Sushi just didn't taste right. The bento boxes and lunch menu didn't say much either. My brother had chicken teriyaki and I decided to take a couple pieces. It was dry. Bad experience.

Had a bad scallop sushi here last Friday --- noticed it at first bite and I didn't eat any more. Told the chef (he ignored me), told the female cashier -- she said it wasn't possible. A weekend of being sick followed. Maybe the health dept. should check it out.

Not great. The sushi was below average and presentation mediocre. Waitress was pushy and a little rude. At least it was cheap but I probably won't come back.

  • Vicki L.

Pretty much your average sushi place. The decor, service, and quality of food are all average. It's no Fuki Sushi, but Tomo's prices are also much lower. I've been coming to this place for years, to satisfy the random sushi craving. It's not the best sushi place around, but there's also never a wait for a table.

Lunch review only. This Japanese restaurant is close to work so our lunch group goes there once in awhile. Most of us get one of the bento box combinations and all but one of them come with tempura. I enjoy a good, crispy light tempura. Unfortunately, what you get at Sushi Tomo is heavy, mushy, and oozing with grease. It isn't just occasionally bad, it is always bad. We were one of the first customers today. When the waitress finally came to our table I was getting a little uncomfortable both from the wait and because the place was hot. I asked if I could substitute something for the tempura. She said, no, the bento boxes were already prepared, whatever that means. I ordered the Salmon plate instead. When my plate finally arrived, I was initially heartened to see a nice large piece of salmon on my plate. My spirit was quickly deflated, however, as I tried cutting into this extremely overcooked completely dry hunk of fish. There are a lot of good Japanese restaurants in this area but this is not one of them.

It is what it is. I don't know why people have such hate for this place. It seems people are expecting caviar quality on a filet-o-fish budget. You should quit fantasizing about scoring fresh caught Hamachi in your $8 bento box. All I've ever gotten here were the bento boxes at lunch and they've always been satisfying and tasty. From the look of the lunch time crowd it would seem most the patron's aren't Yelpers (cuz it's packed). Seems to be a pretty good value since I'm used to getting gouged for 2X Tomo's prices for pretty mediocre bentos in the city. Don't set the bar too high people.

  • Bobby B.

service is awful, esp during lunch (waited a long time to get the check) prices are cheap which means the quality of fish is not all that great the one on university ave is better; less dreary place needs to clean their carpet too.

  • Lu M.

This place is just okay. They are not trying to be the best by no means. I ordered a Bento Box to go at 5pm- Called ahead and I was told 10 mins. I arrived 20 mins later and still had to wait 10 more minutes for it. There was only 1 table occupied, employees were standing around so I'm not sure why the wait. The host who retrieved my order seemed annoyed from the moment I said hi and especially, when I requested more wasabi. I'm sorry but this girl likes to get her wasabi on. The miso soup was bland and had way too much seaweed. The California rolls (not fresh at all), gyoza and teriyaki chicken (kinda rubbery) were as I said, just okay and not worth $10.95. I was definitely underwhelmed.

  • Rahul B.

Exceedingly poor service and so-so sushi. The owner should do Palo Alto a favor and close the restaurant. The waiter couldn't be bothered to bring us plate or napkins or even our bill. The fish and other stuff is not that fresh. With so many choices on University, I see no reason for going back.

I don't know what people complain about. If you don't like cheap good food, get out of town! Seriously, this place is a gem if you are not in the mood to pay a lot for some yummy food to fill your tummy. I love all of their bento box combos, especially the terriyaki chicken. There is some fat stuff on it but just tear it off and don't eat it. I love both their menu and the sushi bar. So what, if you're not allowed to grab stuff from the sushi bar to your table. If you want stuff from the bar, then sit at the BAR. Seriously, it's a no-brainer. Gosh. I like these things: -bento boxes (especially their salad, YUM) -ca rolls -they even make ca rolls with cream cheese -Philly roll -Caterpillar roll -Y2K roll -Dragon roll -Spider roll -Salmon roll This one time, I think I got the Viper roll and it came with the funky eggs on top which I did NOT like. Other than that, I love this place! It's not the CLEANEST, FANCIEST place, but you can't expect it w/ those prices. PLEASE! If you want fancy, go across the street to FUKI's OK!

  • Peter K.

The fish is not fresh, the portions are small, and the service is slow. Not sure why anyone would recommend this place.

    (1)
  • Sabrina T.

I'm a bit surprised at the negative reviews but I had a great experience here as the price is cheap for the portions you get! can't really say anything bad about the service since I came here (group of 5 people) at 3pm for a late lunch/early dinner... and we were the only customers there haha. they gave us the dinner menu (since it was after 2pm). but the prices were still relatively inexpensive! we ordered 4 special rolls and about 2-3 orders of hamachi, salmon, and tuna nigiri. i was impressed with their rolls as they were pretty good portions, and i've had some dinky special rolls with much higher prices at other restaurants. their nigiri was fantastic too and the slices of fish were huge and they waterfalled over the ball of rice. everything was really fresh too! no complaints from anyone this time around, i'll definitely come back!

  • Tina H.

Their green tea smells like seaweed, the sea anenome tasted like slime, the shrimp was okay and the salmon roll was mediocre. I expected more especially since it was jam packed. I usually am lenient when I judge sushi places because I love sushi so damn much but Sushi Tomo, you have failed me :(

Another sushi restaurant in the PA area that left me very disappointed. I should have known not to expect much as soon as I saw the boats of sushi floating around. Service was horrible during the lunch hour. We waited almost 20 minutes before they took our order and they also served my friend's food about 10 minutes before my food arrived. Given their location, they should be aware of the demographics of their clientele and they should also have the right number of employees during the lunch rush. The food was not memorable. I was so displeased with my spider roll that I had to take it apart to eat it. I couldn't stomach all the grease. I gave this place 2 chances. I won't make like Arnold. I won't be back.

I read a review saying it was the best sushi they'd had since moving to the Bay Area. My response: Seriously, you haven't gone to the right places yet. The sushi here on the West Coast is a different level of tasty from anywhere else in the country. Now for my review: Sushi Tomo is a solidly *okay* restaurant. You get what you pay for, basically, and it's better than a lot of the other cheap sushi joints out there. I didn't notice the service to be that terrible but it was a relatively small lunch crowd. I ordered a bunch of unagi and a kani maki roll. They use a weird special sauce with their crab and it's not really to my liking. The unagi is fair. One thing I noticed is that the sushi boats looked pretty fresh. I myself am dubious of raw fish floating on a boat around a table of dozens of germy hands, but it looked much fresher than some of the other sushi boat places I've been to. So yeah; a solid three stars. Not a bad place to go to if you want a decent sushi meal for under $20. EDIT 6/3/08: I feel like I should add that I eat here at least once a week now. I've grown to LOVE the sushi boats and they're the best sushi boat place I've found so far. If I could rate it 3.5 stars, I would. Certain things are hit or miss but if you show up at the start of lunch and sit at the bar, you won't be disappointed.

Sushi is ok in general and prices are very low given what you get; still I'd rather opt for better sushi elsewhere.

  • Lily L.

The food was ok but the service was lacking. Maybe it was the 1 server they had. Maybe. I had tempura roll and a shitake/cucumber roll. The tempura was freshly fried and the shitake/cucumber was tasty. Only problem was that the rice fell apart. The mister had a bento box. Pretty standard stuff.

Sat at the sushi bar after a dentist apmt (see my other review) anyway I had to ask for tea and miso and never even got a refill on my tea which is a big turn off for me. Prices were pretty good.... I got a heaping plate of wakame salad (which I am extra picky about)...also had a white tuna which was meh, they didn't put the buttery oil on the top which was a let down. But for miso, wakame, shiro maguro, and tea I walked out paying 8 bucks... so it wasn't too bad.... why the 2 stars.. the service was lacking....they wouldn't take my bank card they have a 15 dollar min... lucky for me I dug in my purse and found enough in loose change in the bottom of my purse to pay for my meal... if I'm starving again after my next apmt I might give it another try...

I felt a bit hungry after sitting in a cafe reading in Palo Alto downtown, and needed a quick snack. I stumbled into this place, ordering a bowl of shrimp Udon costs $8. It went back a bowl of noodle soup with only 1 piece of shrimp. That is outrageous!! I can understand Palo Alto downtown is premium location, and therefore deserve charging a premium, but this is way out of the line. The raw cost of that bowl amounts less than $1, and that translates a 88% Gross margin. Given the current depressed economic environment, I felt like being robbed by the store. Never go back again

We have been going to Sushi Tomo for a couple years now. Total of about 10 visits or so. We had our ups and downs, but what happened today finally made me to make up my mind - I'm never going there again. For the last several months we made a habit out of ordering a take-out from the other Sushi Tomo, the one at University Avenue. Today my wife misdialed the number and placed the order at THIS Sushi Tomo. Oh well, they are about the same, right? Yeah, right. Half an hour later I got a call from the woman who runs he place: "Where are you? Your order is ready!" WTF? Telling me that it's ready is not enough any more? I momentarily thought about telling her to mind her own business but hey, I'm a patient person. So I drove there and picked up the order. And thats where things started to go downhill. First, my wife ordered an Alaska Roll - something our kids got accustomed to. I know it's not on the Jazz Standards sushi roll list, it's avocado and salmon. Anyways, the guy that took her order over the phone (someone with a case of broken English, apparently), said yes araska roll sure. Usually it's priced in the neighborhood of $5. Turned out that they made an "Alaska Blue" roll which costs $10 and has salmon skin inside and avocado outside. Why they call it Alaska Blue and not Alaska Green is beyond me. Avocado turns blue only if it's rotten and moldy. Whatever. But $10 for the skin of salmon that tasted like that poor thing went through Guantanamo before dying of natural causes is way over the top. The sushi nazi at the counter shoved the menu into my face unapologetically. They did not have Alaska Roll on the menu. Like it was my fault they didn't care to listen to the order. Well, whatever. I was getting hungry and the rest of the family at home weren't getting any happier, so I just paid and took it. I myself ordered chirashi. How can you possibly go wrong with slices of fish (2 tuna, 4 salmon, 4 of some unknown white fish etc) on top of a bunch of rice? Turned out there is a way. When there's a wish... Tuna was completely and utterly tasteless, and possessed that cheerful red-pink color that makes you think of a Kool-Aid. I think the only way to make it lose its taste so completely is to store it in the freezer for a month or so. Another nice touch - when lifted off the bed of rice it left a nice pinkish trace on the rice. Food coloring? I think a more logical explanation is that I've never seen a bowl of chirashi that had been made a day ago and stored in freezer. The "white stuff" I wasn't able to identify, but I could not finish the first slice - it reminded me of cold lard, just as tasteless and greasy. Salmon was barely ok - but there's a clear reason to it. To screw up the salmon slice you have to be a bloody genius. I can do salmon with one hand tied behind my back, and it's gonna be edible, my friends. These guys don't go for difficult stuff, so the salmon was spared. Screwing up the rice was way easier, and so they succeeded spectacularly. The rice did not possess a trace of the seasoned vinegar, although it was quite sticky. Another point for the frozen entries hypothesis. As far as the other stuff goes, the rolls were meh-ok, except for Guantanamo Salmon (a.k.a. Alaska Blue). When they say "it has a bite to it", they bloody mean it - took me five seconds to bite the damn thing, it was so hardened. All in all, I do not recommend anyone to go there for any kind of sushi any more. I choose not to patronize a business that treats heir customers like a bloody piggy bank, misplaces the orders etc. And the quality of their stuff has made a gigantic leap downhill in the last several months. So far we've been happy with the other location of Sushi Tomo, at University Avenue, and my next visit for "sushi on a shoestring budget" will be there.

They completely ruined themselves for me. I'm your number one fan of any place that has a sushi boat and considering that fish is fresh - I used to come there every couple weeks. The last time I was there, the waiter was discontent with the tips. I left the tip for the sushi chef where the chef could see it and I felt that the waiter did not do much else other than point me to a chair at the bar. I still left over 10% in tips but didn't leave right away as I was still talking to my friends. The waiter than came over with my bill and started pointing. Understanding his frustration, I explained my reasoning but he kept insisting on 15%. Call me stingy, call me cheap, call me a capitalist. But those few dollars came down to a hell of a lot of principle.

Went here on a whim. Nothing spectacular, but wasn't bad either. It was decent sushi, but there wasn't anything that was particularly good. I only came because I was hungry and Fuki Sushi was closed. :)

Came here for dinner 'coz we didn't know the tofu house close by does not open on Sundays. I had the combo dinner with sashimi (2 pieces of salmon and 2 pieces of halibut), salmon and tempura (shrimp and veggies) served with miso soup and salad for $10.95. Nothing exciting about this place! Service was quick and portion was generous though.

Interesting to see many negative reviews here. For the price, it's not that bad =) Sushi is not the freshest though. The bento dinner portion is generous. The rolls are pretty good and are served pretty fast. If you want a low-key affordable quick dinner, I recommend this place!

I've been going to Tomo for a while. Sometimes they have good sushi, other times, it absolutely stinks. After a while, I realized that it was so hit and miss because I didn't know when the fish was fresh or when it had been sitting in the fridge for days, so I befriended a couple of the sushi chefs and got them to tell me when the fish shipments came in and thus when I should most likely come in for some sashimi. It's been a while since I had the sushi, since I'm preggers, so I can't tell you when the shipments come in exactly. OK, so the last time I ordered to go from there, about a month ago, I had the katsu don (sp?), it's the breaded fried pork cutlet and veggies, with egg, served over rice. I've had it there a few times, but the last time it was really bad. The pork was so overcooked and the veggies were old and soggy. It was absolutely terrible. I was too busy and hungry to come back and complain, and good thing I didn't, my hormonal butt probably would have forced the owner to taste that crap if I had come back to complain - I would have force fed it to her. Anyhoo, Tomo is very hit and miss. If you get sushi, make sure it's made for you on the spot and doesn't come from the sushi boats. I think you'll be better off ordering the cooked food ... they do a better job with it, most of the time. The good thing about Tomo is that it is fast and inexpensive.

Boring, unoriginal menu, old-tasting salmon sashimi, lacklustre run-of-the-mill rolls, nonexistent service, the list goes on. Having been to enough Japanese restaurants in the bay area, I started noticing the common theme amongst the JFFs (Japanese Food Fraudsters): 1) Brightly printed laminated menu with colorful pictures of what are gross misrepresentation of the actual dishes 2) Lukewarm watered down tea 3) Dragon roll, caterpillar roll, and rainbow roll (I kid you not) 4) (Optional) Sad-looking sushi pieces on a slow-moving sushi boat in the middle of the restaurant.

Sat at the sushi bar with some co-workers for lunch today. The salmon and other ingredients were quite fresh and the Philadelphia rolls had generous amounts of salmon and avocado compared to the cream cheese. The gyoza didn't look so good as it kept coming around - it didn't look crispy, so I didn't bother. The tea looked really weak, but it actually tasted good. We did wait a while for some empty seats to be cleared for us, but the staff seemed to be doing their best. Overall, the service was fine for a sushi bar experience. I usually spend $20 to satisfy a sushi craving, but this place came out to about $12/person. I would go back for lunch again.

A decent sushi place but with so many others nearby I'd probably try something else next time. Got to downtown a bit early for my movie and was peckish, so I stopped in for some tea and a roll. The service was slow, even though it was early and not crowded, and my tiny teacup went forever unfilled. The roll was good - a little crunchy, which is odd for a dragon, but otherwise tasty. Overall the price was too high for what I got, and the quality reasonable but uninspiring.

Just had lunch there with my coworkers today. I ordered my favorite Vege Udon soup. And I found bugs in my soup! So I called the waitress and showed her the bugs. She did not say a word, but took my entire bowl back to the kitchen. When she came back after a couple minutes, she told me it's shitake mushroom. But I can see the bugs' legs pretty clear. So I showed her the bugs I got from my soup on a white napkin. She was out of patience and took my napkin away, nothing happened after that. She was trying to ignore us!!!! Then we went to the front counter for our check. She charged me for the soup!!!! While my coworker was explaining the thing to her boss, the rude waitress came and spoke Korean with her boss that none of us understand. But I heard she said "shitake mushroom", so I tried to explined it to her again. She just ignored me again! So did her boss. So rude!!! Just like she didnt hear me at all, and still talking loudly in Korean to her boss. But... we ended up not paying for the Udon soup. I will never go back to Tomo again! So gross! I have no idea how many bugs I ate.

I tried Sushi Tomo for the first time today and was delighted. I ordered #16, which comes with fried mackeral, tempura and sashimi- fish was a bit dry, tempura was crispy and well prepared and the sashimi was extremely fresh and delicate. One complaint I have is that on one of the hottest days in July (today), the AC was insufficient and it felt like a sauna in there. Besides that, everything was good and I will return.

My family and I come here about twice a month for a weekend lunches and the food is great! Surprisingly I see lots of families take their kids here on weekends too, such cultured bay area children. It's fun to sit around the sushi boat, and even if it's depleted you can always ask the sushi chef to make you something off the menu. Their salmon (sake) nigiri and their unagi rolls are among my favorite dishes, though my mom swears by her salmon teriyaki lunch special which comes with salad and miso soup. they have everything from individual orders of sushi to larger rolls so you don't have to be famished to have a good experience. I prefer this location on el camino to the one in downtown palo alto because it's more chill and you don't have to deal with any crowds. service on weekends can be slow but I went on a weeknight for a dinner and the service was so fast and attentive. Huge fan of this neighborhood sushi place!

The sushi is decent. I agree with the other posts that the service is poor. They pretty much want you to sit at the bar and serve yourself from the boats, which is fine, although I saw the same piece of unwanted sushi float by over and over the entire time I was there, so I'm not sure how fresh it is. Parking is a hassle.

I would give Sushi Tomo 0 star if the system allow me... the food was okay at this cheap price. But the service is bad as hell!!!! We ordered two lunch boxes and a Negihama hand roll. After the first bite of yellowtail in that hand roll, I smelled something sour and weird... And my hubby agreed with me after he tried it. We were like, okay, no biggie, we can finish the lunch boxes then just let them know about the weird-taste yellowtail later. At least they wont give the fish to other customers if something wrong with the yellowtail. When the waitress gave us the bill, we told her we dont like the negihama hand roll in low voice. But she yelled back! She kept saying that no customer ever complain about their fish. Then I said "I am your customer" She yelled at me that if I dont believe her I can go ahead to ask the chef. Without waiting my response, she loudly asked the sushi chef behind the sushi bar far from my table if the fish is fresh or not. Of course the chef said its fresh. Then she looked back to my face said, see, the chef said its fresh. I have no idea why she talked in this high voice so that everyone could hear what's going on. Fine! Its their loss! Of course we told her that she should respect customer's opinion but apparently she is from Mars. She just didnt listen at all. I didnt want to behave like a crazy bitch in front of my father-in-law or I would definitely keep fighting with her and refuse to pay for anything!!! The WORST SERVICE I have ever had in my whole life!!!!

Yikes, lots of harsh ratings on here... I have been here several times, and I've never been disappointed or unsatisfied. If you walk in in search of purely authentic Japanese food, you might be a little disappointed, starting with the fact that the waiters are not Japanese. If you can get past that, they serve good Japanese food; it's just that some things on the menu have been slightly Americanized or served in a less traditional way, especially the sushi, as you will find in most casual sushi places. I highly recommend their fried oyster rolls and their various lunchtime bento box specials if you're worried about the quality of the sashimi. There are better places to go for sushi, but Sushi Tomo offers a lot of other Japanese dishes and they're one of the lower priced and more casual Japanese places out there.

Poor service, mediocre food. Katsu don was soggy and bland, and the meat itself was dry. The only thing that kept me going through the bowl was my hunger, a lot of soy sauce, and the slices of surimi and pickled daikon. Agedashi tofu was alright actually, just enough batter and lightly fried. As for the service, the waitress acted as if we were being such a bother to her when we ordered more food. Excuse us for giving you more money! Parking can be hard to find during lunch hours but there are a lot of lots with 2 free hours for you to choose from.

"Okay food, poor poor service." I don't even want to waste too much time writing this review after having lunch at Sushi Tomo. Our family went there on 4/18/2014 Friday for lunch, we thought it's should be a good relaxed lunch time since it's a weekday. But actually it's a bad dinning experience especially for the first visit (and it will be our last visit too). Here are why we felt the service level is quite poor: 1. We've been asked "ready to order?" 4 times by different waitress within 2 min, even we haven't settled and have told the waitress we need more time to read the menu. They just kept coming back to ask "are you ready"? Don't understand why they were so rush? 2. Only 1 high chair available in the restaurant -- not family friendly (we brought 3 kids). 3. When we finished 80% of our lunch (my wife simply took one kid to the rest room), the waitress already came and started to clean up with a big big cart. 4. We used our own plastic table mat for our 15mo-old, and the waitress simply put the tray (for check) on our little one's mat 5. We expressed our feelings to the most senior waitress (who took care of the cash register), and she seemed doesn't care. Won't be there 2nd time.

For the $$ you paid for, I should say you got a pretty good deal. There is nothing special about the meal, but the food's quality and the quantity is worth the money. for quick lunch meal it's definitely better choices out in that area.

Sushi Tomo is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in the area. I love the bento boxes since it comes with shrimp/vegetable tempura and gyoza or sushi. The service is always good. Everyone there is very friendly. ... not like other places with rude/inattentive/inept staff. This is my go-to place when I'm in the mood for Japanese food. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because I've grown up eating genuinely authentic Japanese food from Japan and Hawaii, and it doesn't compare to anything I've ever eaten in California.

This place used to be pretty good a few years ago. Sad to say it's been going downhill, and after my last visit I've decided it's not worth going back anymore. Got inside the restaurant at 8:15 on Sunday night and were told we can't sit at the sushi bar because they are closing at 9:00. Anyhow, we sit at the regular table and are rushed through the whole process and are out the door at 8:40. This included the waitress bringing the bill about two minutes after receiving our food and being told "you pay now" even though I'm in the middle eating my meal. Food from the dinner menu is pretty average, but I used to like the sushi. Good luck to this place if they keep the current wait staff.

So I have been coming to this place off and on for a long time, the quality of food is really going down hill. We got a Bento box for dinner and it was on the high side on price given the quality it wasn't good. The chicken felt like it was a bit old and slightly covered in sauce and the tempura wasn't that fresh either. The upside is the sushi rolls are decent but you still can find better for the price.

Just came back from lunch there -- ordered the lunch special. As I was eating the salad, I noticed something kind of grainy. When I looked more closely, I noticed that there was dirt in the salad. I let the waitress know, and she only apologized. Now-- I understand that this was probably just an honest accident, so I wasn't expecting then to comp the meal or to even give a discount, but I'm surprised they didn't at least offer replace the salad. They didn't even need to replace the entire meal. It was a little unappetizing to be eating the teriyaki while starting down at a small pile of mud. The waitress did give me an extra napkin to clean the mud off my fingers. After going there all these years, that might have been my last visit.

Had an average experience here some months ago but decided to give it another go - should have skipped it. Sat at the boat bar in the evening - not many choices and not much being added - had to keep asking for stuff. Sushi did not taste fresh - in fact it did not have much taste at all, the unagi was rubbery So lousy sushi - who cares if it's cheap? Bizarrely best thing ? Very gooey cheapo chocolate eclairs!!

Maaaaaaaan, I ate the fish here and I spit it out because it was so rank (California Roll). Who messes up a California Roll? Oh, a restaurant who believes in air-marinating their fish for hours. I'd like to send my regards to the chef and to the owner.

Service is garbage. Owned and operated by Chinese people. But the food is as good as any typical Americanized sushi place and even their hamachi and salmon nigiri on the boat was fresh and generously portioned. I suggest coming early as I bet they do not take away boats when they get too old. Also, the tea is pretty good, loose leaf. In fact it's probably the most reliable aspect of the place. If you're comparing this place to Fuki Sushi, you're doing it wrong.

S.l.o.w.e.s.t. .s.e.r.v.i.c.e. .e.v.e.r. Seriously. Even when we come early for lunch and there's not 10 parties in the restaurant we have to wait forever for food. They aren't very aware of when you need more water and it's impossible to wave down a waiter because they will just breeze past. When we finally waved one down at the end of our meal to ask for water and a box, we figured the guy would know it meant we're ready for our check. Nope. Had to wave him down again to ask for it. That said, it's fine for a relatively cheap bento box. I always get #5, chicken teriyaki with sashimi and tempura. Their fish is reasonably fresh and the tempura is a little overbreaded but I am plenty full with some leftovers at the end of the meal.

I rate this based on value, above all things for this review. Here's the trick: eat at the sushi bar, where you can self serve your meal from the boats. Why? Because as you'll see in many reviews, the service can be a little slow and sketchy. Sushi Bar = instant gratification. Our little guy loves to pick the boats he is going to eat. I love that he eats fish. And, we value the speedy ability to get something to eat as soon as we sit down. What could be faster service than boats that tee up the sushi as soon as you sit down? We still special order a spider roll from the guys in the bar area. Also a good tip to follow. And, the value is great. If anybody knows where there is sushi anywhere close to this price within 10 miles, I'd be curious to hear about it.

This was my go to sushi place when I lived and worked in the Palo Alto/Los Altos area. They used to know me every time I walked in the restaurant. Staff has changed over a bit and they don' t know me the way they used to but they still serve the same great food. Yesterday, I got the bento box with chicken teriyaki, tempura, and California rolls. This was always the best deal for sushi in town and it appears that it still is. This particular visit was a step away from sitting at the sushi bar as I usually did back in the day. I'll be sure to be back soon with friends who still live up there and sit at the bar again!

Slimy, gamey sushi. Ordered salmon, tuna and yellowtail rolls. I was grossed out eating it. Had to force myself to choke it down. Surprised that Sushi Tomo on Blossom Hill Rd in San Jose is excellent, but this Palo Alto spot is so bad. Service was prompt.

3.5 stars. Not sure if the owners are trying to confuse people with Sushi Tomo and Sushi Tomi? Came since the wait at SGD was too long and Fuki Sushi was too expensive. On a Thursday evening, the restaurant was pretty empty and consisted of mainly Caucasians or solo diners. There is a sushi boat with various sushi priced from $1.95-4.95 a dish. I tried the mussels with mango salsa and it was pretty good. My entree was the bento box with teriyaki salmon, salmon sashimi, shrimp+veggie tempura. The salmon was kind of small and not tender. The salmon sashimi was surprisingly smooth and good. The tempura was tempura. Didn't pay much attention to the service since we sat at the bar and didnt require much assistance. Overall, decent food if I was in the area but my ultimate go-to sushi place is Sushi Tomi in Mountain View or Tomi Sushi in San Jose (both owned by the same people).

I liked this place! I'm not sure why it's rated low. We came on saturday afternoon, so basically only a handful of people in the restaurant. The rolls came out fast and they were reasonably priced and a good size. Super oregon and super boston roll rocked =) Would totally go back.

I went out for sushi in Palo Alto the other night and I couldn't find many good reviews. I happened to park right outside on Sushi Tomo-so I went in. Service: We weren't greeted...at all. A few minutes later there was a clean table...a 2-top in the middle of 2 other 2 tops in the middle of the restaurant...I said no and waited for another table to open up. Food: The sushi wasn't that bad. I had miso, a maguro sashimi appetizer for $13 and 2 other rolls. Mediocre at best. Sashimi was big but not the best cut. And they were out of spicy mussels. :( Ambiance: zero. Cleanliness: ehhh the ginger was on the table in a huge jar. I was craving it, but didn't eat it because who knows how many hands were in the jar. kinda gross. My Recommendation: skip sushi and go Italian. Its always good.

For $10.50, the Sushi combo of 3 rolls + miso soup + as much free green tea (not bad Gen Mai Cha) is not an awful deal. Of the three rolls, the crab roll is pretty awful, but the cucumber roll and tuna roll weren't bad. All in all, this is far from the best sushi you'll ever eat, but for a 10.50 sushi combo any time of day, I think it's acceptable. Based on how close this is to work for me, I'll be back at some point, I'm guessing.

Eek! Methinks not for sure. I came here with my sister and was not satisfied with the service or sushi at all. I ordered the very basic sushi rolls: Tekka Maki, Sake Nigiri, and Philadelphia Roll. The service here was very slow and the sushi chef even messed up on my Philly Roll. Seriously, how can you mess up on a Philly Roll? The ingredients are: - salmon - cucumber - cream cheese The Philly Rolly they made me: - Salmon - Cream Cheese What the heck? I knew there was something wrong with the rolls that I received. How can you have slow service and mess up on the sushi orders? Overall not a good visit. I'm never coming back here again.

I've had mixed experiences over the years, some great, some bones in my sushi. Tonight I tried to order take away. I had difficulty confirming order so I drove over. I was greeted harshly. She showed me her order slip and I was supposed to decipher her scribbles! I asked for help, nicely, but she refused to look in my direction. Gave up and left.

The fish really just isn't up to par. Also, the service here is pretty poor. They seem to have no regular hours which they are open. They also really hate students on the minimum days of the Palo Alto School District. The atmosphere is a bit drab. Fuki Sushi, though expensive might just be worth it in comparison.

Most of the reviews on this place seem to be on the actual service and NOT the food itself, so lets try and change that. Service aside, Sushi Tomo is really not bad for a budget sushi joint. The ingredients are always fresh, the portions are generous, and you can usually get out for under $15 depending on how large your appetite is. These prices are unheard of for sushi on the peninsula. Yes, the service can be quite slow and unresponsive but I learned that if you sit at the bar, you almost never have any issues. Just grab whatever sushi you'd like off of their adorable little boats, and if you do want something off the menu you just need to tell the sushi chefs themselves. This bypasses the waiters all together and makes things much more streamlined and efficient. In fact, the only interaction you'll ever need to have with the waiters is getting your bill or a drink, which can be a challenge in itself! It can be really easy to screw up sushi, but these guys do stellar job for the price. Although one thing I noticed, the boats at the bar tend to get pretty sparse really early in the evening and later at night. 7pm is probably the best time to eat here.

It had a really fun atmosphere with a conveyer of boats carrying sushi. I thought the sushi was the perfect price for what it was worth, and it was quite scrumptious.

I tend to agree with most of the reviews on Sushi Tomo. As a fan of bento boxes, I can tell you that their lunch boxes are pretty descent in portion and the fact that you can get a combo with shashimi, chicken teriyaki , and tempura is a steal! While the food isn't "exceptionally" good, it certainly fills my bento cravings. True, the service can be a bit slow and forgetful at times, but that just means you have to kindly raise your hand to get their attention. The place can get crowded during lunch time, so they're doing something right. The one thing that does annoy me somewhat is the weird soapy smell throughout the restaurant. True, soap smell usually means the place is clean, but this smell is just downright strong...something you have to block out with a nice hot bento box.

Took my mom to lunch here. Positive note: Cheap prices Quick service if you are in a hurry for lunch Miso soup & salad, who can screw this up Negatives: Horrible service Unseasoned food Teriyaki beef looked like it was pulled out of a freezer and looked grey mediocre sushi which reflects in price My experience: ordered the beef teriyaki bento box. Tempura and California roll were okay. The beef was just nasty! As stated above; looked grey and out of the freezer with a ladle of teriyaki sauce. Took a bite and it was tasteless. No salt and tasted boxed with a less than flavorful sauce. I asked the waitress quietly for something else since the beef had no flavor. She replied, "What do you mean no flavor? The sauce flavors it! No, I can't give you something else. It is all ready cooked." I was shocked and appalled. After going back and forth about a replacement, she finally asked someone in the back for permission. Needless to say, I got pork cutlet as a replacement and it was better. Probably because it has to be fried fresh and not just have sauce thrown on it. But there is NO excuse for questioning or refusing a paying customer for something else. I will Not be going back.

  • Natasha P.

It's not really bad, but it's not that great either. I've been here a couple time and sat at the sushi bar for lunch. Not really the largest selection makes it's way around the boats, but the staff will order you specific dishes that you don't see coming around. I'm not sure if it's fair to be too harsh of a critic when it comes to service because I am at the bar, but they never refill on their own accord or ask how everything is going. I think a little care in your customer's meal goes a long way, especially when it comes to tipping beyond the standard percentage. Also, their parking lot is ridiculously small and everyone suddenly loses their ability to park or get out of their parking spot quickly and efficiently.

  • Christine M.

The food is surprisingly good. I avoided this place for the first year I lived here simply because raw fish+fast food ambiance seemed iffy. But I'm impressed with the sushi and the sashimi, and love the great prices. My only complaint is the slightly aloof staff. From forgetting to provide plates and chop sticks, to not checking in all through dinner, it's just odd. And the last time we were there at about 8:30pm on a Friday, they started cleaning the floors with Ammonia during dinner, which smelled horrible. But hey, good food for super cheap - I guess that's OK.

If you like a whole lot of fish in your mouth, go to Sushi Tomo. Here you get the biggest Sushi portions for your buck. This is my Omega 3 heaven! We eat here a lot. My kids like the Sushi Boat Bar and the fish is always fresh, we never had a bad experience. Why just 4 Stars? Well it's not totally original Japanese Sushi.

This past Sunday, the s/o and I were wanting to eat at Sushi Tomi in Mountain View but, they were closed for the holiday weekend for some construction work. The GPS then directed us to Sushi Tomo. The s/o and I have never been there so we figured we'd try it out. I wish I could've looked at Yelp while driving because I would've totally drove the other direction...and it would've been worth the ticket, if I got caught! We get there and it wasn't that busy at all so we sat at the boat. There wasn't anything that appealed to me on the boats, not to mention, the sushi didn't look that spectacular or any of their special rolls on their menu so I just ordered their Chicken Katsu dinner. It was good, but nothing about it stood out from any other Chicken Katsu I've had. The s/o ordered the usual hand rolls and had a couple seaweed salads. The s/o loves sushi but wasn't feeling this place at all, not to mention, the service sucked. We had to flag someone down to get refills as well as to get the bill. It's not like the resto was busy at all, I don't get it? Even the sushi chefs weren't all that friendly. What really, really sucks is that the same items floating on the boats were still floating after 40-minutes of us sitting there. It makes me truly wonder how long they were sitting prior to our arrival and after our departure. SMH. When we left and pulled out of the driveway, we see another sushi resto, Fuki Sushi and it was poppin busy. Damnit GPS...why didn't you take us there instead?!? Grr! Bottom line, Sushi Tomo is quite forgettable.

I've been a frequent lunch patron of Sushi Tomo for years. I've always like popping for their sushi boat, its reasonably prices and you generally avoid the poor service. Over the last few months the sushi boat has gone down hill. Today I arrived shortly afternoon only to find that about 1/4 of the boats had anything on them. After waiting 15 minutes I finally just asked for a menu as nothing new was placed on the boats. This has been my experience over the last 2-3 months. I agree with most of the reviews, the food is generally good but the service is a bit on the slow side and they are often understaffed.

I keep coming back because the prices are good and I haven't found another acceptable restaurant in the area. However I am disappointed each time I go, because in the past, and still every now and then they do deliver a good experience. Fundamentally, their problems are: 1) inconsistency ... all the problems below happen often but not every time. 2) lack of freshness. Most of their fish is fresh but usually one or two pieces per meal are almost inedible. 3) cost cutting kills variety: unless you arrive early (but not too early!) on a busy day, the sushi boats are empty. Sure you can order from the chefs but its a disappointment to see the empty boats. 4) spotty service. You can get good service here, but I have a litany of bad service experiences burned into my memory from the last few years. I even got yelled at by an angry waiter who didn't get a tip after he ignored me for nearly an hour during my meal. If you want good service, don't go when its busy... but then the boats will be empty! I will stop coming here as soon as I find another restaurant near me that serves reasonable wishing at reasonable prices. I love fuki sushi across the street, but their prices make them a special treat.

I have given Sushi Tomo many years of loyal service. I returned home from college and wanted to grab some sushi tomo, so my mom and I went to go get some takeout today. We ordered 3 lunch bento boxes and was told it'd be 10-15 minutes. That's fine and we took a walk, and when we came back the boxes were ready to go and we went on our way. However, we opened them up and they had only given us the pork cutlet, without all the extras that come with the Bento boxes. We bought 3 so we were missing the tempura, gyoza and CA rolls. We called them up to see if we could go pick up what they'd forgotten, but then they threw a bitch fit about how we were wrong. They said we had mistaken our order, even though we paid the full price of a bento box. After some more back and forth, the man said that whoever took our order was on break and we'd have to wait for him because this issue is "between you and that guy." NO, it SHOULD be between me and the restaurant. They were extremely rude, never offered any solution or anything that resembled an apology. He said to call later to speak with a manager. So extremely rude, they have no regard for customer service and just try to shift the blame to everyone else for their shitty service. DO NOT GO HERE unless you want terrible service, mediocre food (oh yes, btw it was extremely dry and tough to chew. I ate 2 pieces and gave the rest to the dogs) AND want to be overcharged and underfed.

I have been eating here for a while, and it finally dawned on me one night when I took my wife there and decided not to drink beer and sake that the sushi sucks. I usually drink about 4-6 saporos and a large amount of sake, then start plucking sushi from the boats. This is not supposed to be like bowling, only good if you drink.

The 2.5 yelp rating is really spot on A few things that would help improve the ratings: The woman taking my order was visibly annoyed by me. She walked away. The second lady was also unpleasant. Take out orders don't get miso soup. Why penalize take out orders? I'd give it 3 or 4 stars if that changed.

We came here at around 4 pm - it said on Yelp that they were open, but that wasn't the case when we got there. My friend explained to them that their restaurant hours were innacurate, and we had no choice but to leave (had korean food instead), though we parked our car in their lot. About 2 hours later, we returned back to the lot, and as we were about to drive off, one of the workers, a young lady, chased our car down, and gave us a takeaway box full of fresh sushi. Flustered, she explained that their owner changed and thanked us profusely for telling them about their hours. We went back, and although we ate previously, couldn't resist sampling their colorful, fresh rolls - one completely decked out with unagi. Just estimating the price, it must have been worth $30 and was on point. In short, long story, we didn't actually sit down here for a meal, but it was a worthwhile visit nonetheless. Give this place a try if you happen to be around El Camino! Unagiii....

Used to go there often, but no more. Food is not bad, but not consistent. One time it's great, but the next time it seems different. Also, be wary of the sushi on the boats. Got a very old one once, told the waiter, and he took it away, did not say sorry, and did not offer a new one.... The main reason it gets a two-star is the service. The older lady who normally works there is grouchy, pushy, and makes you feel rushed, almost like you are inconveniencing her by being there. Not big on saying thank you either. Oh ya, she grumpily STARES at your bill while you write in the tip. This was the tipping point. Will not be going back.

We have been coming here for awhile, with friends and family. But no more. Today we were sadly disappointed with both the food and service. The waitress was unfamiliar with the menu so we had to show the menu or spell the items. Before completing the order, she stopped to take another customer's order. This was very rude given there were only 3 parties in the entire restaurant. The order came but was missing 2 items. The waitress denied forgetting the order and was argumentative. Instead of ordering the items for us, she said, "Whatever," and walked away. We were so surprised. Much later, she returned asking if we still wanted the salad that she had forgotten. We were done and said no. With regard to the food, the soba noodles were mushy and overcooked. The appetizer came in a thick, black, sticky syrup instead of a light dipping sauce. Our full sushi order never came. I asked for the manager or owner to express our concerns. A waiter said there was no manager, and to talk to the sushi chef. I told the sushi chef that I preferred to talk to the manager or owner about the poor service, rather than speak to him through a review. The sushi chef shrugged his shoulders and said he would talk to the owner next month. There was no clue about running a restaurant and customer service, and no apology. I would not recommend even one star.

why the low reviews? My husband and toddler and I love coming here. Jonathan-son and the staff are very nice, attentive and the sushi here is good. Big, fresh and pricing is good. We love their sushi boats also! The Salmon Sashimi, Spicy Tuna Roll, California Roll, the Fried Oyester hand roll and the various rolls at the sushi boat bar is all good.

LARGE pieces of Sashimi. SO much avocado in the avocado rolls. The price is incredibly reasonable for sushi. I love some of the chefs. My family had been coming here for a while when my parents were together and when I lived in Palo Alto. Haven't been there for about 2-3 years... I came in the other day, one of the chefs recognized me and made me a free plate of sushi. It was really sweet. I love that.

I won't be coming here again. Sushi did not meet my expectations. The spicy tuna roll really disappointed me. The rice was dry and hard. Looked like it was thrown together without a thought. Sushi is an art no matter how basic or how traditional the order may be. Excellence should be a priority. Majority of the boats were empty. The chefs weren't making anything. I chose to go here because I enjoy the experience of sitting & watching food float past me. This place failed to deliver. Tbh, waste of money.

Food is decent, but when asking for a substitution... The waiter cannot think outside of the bento box... Doesn't bother to ask manager, just straight up, no.

Originally, my plan was to eat at this Korean spot that was located across the street from this Sushi spot. But granted the fact that it's been almost 4 months since I since had last sushi, the thought of sushi just sounded simply savory. LOCATION: Very hidden from the main road, I walked from the Tofu House across the street, behind to Sushi Tomo. My friend drove all around the block (which ended up taking a few minutes) in order to get into the small private parking lot. So, unless you were hanging out at the Starbucks parking lot or the Tofu House parking lot (or Yelping for a Sushi spot), I do not think you would be able to catch it passing by. PARKING: There was all but 6 - 8 parking spots right in front of the restaurant. Your other option is street parking. Thank goodness you don't have to pay for parking. EXTERIOR: A typical sushi house, Japanese oriented, organized, and obvious a sushi spot. INTERIOR: Clean, well kept, tabled cleared. Curtains, warm colors decor, figurines; just like any other sushi spot. In the center of the venue locates the sushi boat bar. Around it are tables and booths. I had us (my friend and I) at the sushi boat bar thinking that the options may be exciting. SUSHI: I plucked some rolls from the floating boats. One was oysters with some sort of salsa covering it. Interesting taste, between sweet, cold and unflattering texture. The salsa was so strong that I barely tasted the oyster. Another one was a spicy orange sauce covered oyster. This was much more to my taste. Spicy and had a bit of oyster taste. My friend plucked out an eel type of roll and I plucked out a few tempura rolls myself. I ordered a Teriyaki Salmon bento dish and a roll (yep, I gotten a little fat after my consumption). I ordered some hot house sake for two(2) and we just relaxed on a Saturday afternoon. Not bad. Nothing stood out to me, but nothing was bad. SERVICE: Our water was always filled and we were checked on occasionally. Service was quick and pleasant. No complaints. One thing: perhaps they can crack a smile once in awhile. =) VERDICT: I would like to try other sushi spots. Due to the fact that it was conveniently near by, I would probably drop by again. Maybe this time, walk instead of driving.

Hmmm. A lot of people are really down on Sushi Tomo, and the rating is alarmingly low. I find it interesting that half of the negative reviews in the last few years are from yelpers with less than 20 reviews to their name. Not sure if that means anything or not. Maybe they don't want to disagree with the small group of elite yelpers who gave poor marks 5 and 6 years ago? Places do change, you know. I agree it's not the best sushi spot out there, but for me it sits squarely in the 'average' category. I've never had a food quality issue or a bad experience here. I eat lunch here once every other month or so, since it's close to work and there is rarely a wait. The bento boxes are decent, and service is friendly and quick. For an even quicker lunch, I sit at the sushi boat area, I order one roll off the menu (The 'Tokyo Roll' is a favorite) and then I sample a one or two items off the boats. About 20 bucks and 20 minutes. It's a decent price for Japanese, and very easy. It's not something I'd want to do every day, but a nice treat now and then. Quality is always fine. As I said, a 3-star spot, though I'm tempted to add one more star to offset all the Negative Newbies.

Recent drawback: They recently changed the sushiman, so the frequency and quality of service at the bar lowered and surprisingly disappointed me. This is the reason from 3 to 2 stars.

I love the food here but the service really sucks. I've been coming here for the past ten years with my family. We are definitely what you would call regulars. I would love to give five stars but the service really takes a couple stars off. Let's start with the good: the sushi here really is great. The fish is king and they try not to ruin the freshness of the fish by slathering everything in sauce. They also use big chucks of fish- they don't skimp out. They have raised their prices within the last year but it's still affordable enough. Now the bad: the service. Please always count your check- make sure it's correct. They tend to accidentally over charge you by a couple of bucks. It also takes a while to get attention from the servers- no matter how many times you've been here The summary of the story is that I'll keep coming for the food but I will also bring a calculator and some patience.

ok i feel bad for this place. i went literally an hour ago for friday evening dinner and thought the place deserves 5 stars. sat at the bar, ordered sashimi combo dinner, which had 15 FAT slices of sashimi. i could barely eat them all even though i came ravenous. i love that the slices are so generous -- that's definitely uncommon! the sushi chef was awesome. they checked in with me three times to see if everything was going well. the miso soup hit the spot, rice was perfect, i'm not sure what else they can do! it made me sad that friday 6pm was a little empty. i blame yelp. blah. would definitely come back. i loved that the staff were so friendly and efficient!

God Awful. We arrive on Friday night at 8:45 and were rushed to order and rushed to pay. The table was sticky, the gyozo was greasy, the salmon skin hand rolls were smelly, and the hamachi rolls were not what we ordered. Avoid!

Why can't I give 0 star? WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! They were so rude and arrogant.

  • Kirsten A.

SUSHI BOATS! This place is moderately priced sushi, but seemed a little understaffed. The food was pretty good; I especially liked the fried Salmon sushi and dumplings. I like sitting at the boats because I can get a variety of things that spark my interest as they float by, or ask the cooks for something I would like. All in all, a good place.

Ive been many times for my So Palo Alto "cheaper" sushi fix. I was going to order Omakase and leave a review today but they didn't know what I was talking about. I explained what it was but they said they wouldn't do it. Providing the omakase experience should be a chance for the cool to show off but apparently Sushi Tomo feels they should not. And oddly, none of the wait staff speaks Japanese. It's not that I'm trying to make a racial point; I simply think it's funny that if a Japanese person came to this sushi restaurant there would be a language barrier. Good for the price. That's all I can say.

  • Jimmy U.

The food was good but not typical sushi, i.e fish parts were really big. The maki were so big it was hard to eat them in a single bite. The bentos are really good value for money. Service was good and fast, surprised about other reviews complaining about. Okay they could smile a little more, but no big deal. Maybe we were lucky. Also it was dinner and the place was kinda empty, maybe different at noon. Price was really fair. Pleasant experience for us!

We came around 5:30 on a Wed night. Restaurant was practically empty - there were two other guests. Our food took a full 30 mins to arrive, which I thought was way too long. Food quantity was very generous for the price. California roll was fresh and delicious, so are the Salmon Teriyaki, Chiken Teriyaki and Super Tokyo Roll. The Hamachi Kama was quite large, but unfortunately a little burned and dry. The Spicy Tuna roll however, did not taste fresh. On the whole a potentially good restaurant if they try to be a little more careful with the broiling (Hamachi Kama) and never use less than fresh fish for sushi/sashimi. Do not believe that spices can cover up fish that taste unfresh.

This is the worst sushi place I have ever been to. I feel disgusted after the meal, even though I am a big sushi fan. The fish is sliced so inappropriately such that I felt I was chewing a whole raw fish. Hotate (scallop) is not even fresh, but instead the salad version. I cannot believe they charge this much price for this kind of quality of sushi. Anyone who has a bit standard for sushi should not tolerate this quality.

  • Mustavah P.

I'm giving 2 stars because I didn't get sick. It's a sushi bar revolving boat mess. I prefer to have a chef prepare my rolls straight from the cooler. Being generous I'd say its the Wendy's of sushi.

After a number of visits it's finally time to accept that Sushi Tomo is a Sushi NoMo. I've eaten here now for lunch and dinner at different times of the week; always assuming that the selection must be better and fresher other times. But now I know it always consists of mostly empty sushi boats with a few old dry looking California Rolls out for a cruise. Saturday night at 7:00 pm should be peak time but still meager selection available. Sushi Chef constantly wiping nose sealed the deal. Much better sushi options available. Meh!

The food was incredibly bland. Horrendous service. No one was in the restaurant. It was just us on a weekend night. Fuki sushi was hopping across the street so we came here because we were starving. Took forever just to get water and it's pretty expensive for what it is. I could get better sushi at whole foods for less. The red dragon was decent. The restaurant did not seem fresh - everything smelled and tasted fishy in a bad way. Totally underwhelmed and not returning. The one positive is that the rolls were huge!

I don't get why people on Yelp hate this place so much. I've been coming here for years with my family for dinner at the boat. The food is delicious and fresh, the servings of fish are very generous. The price used to be lower than other places, but now it's pretty much the same. I've gotten lunch here a couple of times as well and the bento boxes are pretty good too. The only 2 negatives (and therefore -1 star) -the service could be better, I agree. The servers aren't rude, just a little absent -not enough stuff gets added to the boat. However the sushi chefs are very nice and will make you what you want really quickly. Hint: if you only want half of a special roll (the amount you would have gotten off the boat) just ask for it. The second half of the roll will float by you soon enough

Very disappointed! Really wanted a bento box, but was unable to eat the fish katsu (sp?)! It was super salty. Told the manager and she just said sorry! Never going back. Oh yea and I didn't leave a tip! Sorry to all the kitchen staff!

Food was average. Service was slow and without a smile. We came in around 8:15pm and stood there for a good 2-3 minutes before anyone paid us attention. The waitresses seemed tired and uninterested in anything. The bento box we ordered was missing ginger and salad --- we had to ask to get it. Pretty sloppy operation overall.

This place for my first time wasn't as bad as the reviews led me to believe. The service was prompt and friendly. My waiter was very polite and efficient managing my table and the other 3 tables that were there. The sushi chef was quick and made visually pleasing rolls. $7.50 - Great value on the crazy horse roll which includes tuna, hamachi, and salmon. (Salmon/Hamachi not fresh) $3.95 - Salmon handroll was quite large and generous on the salmon portion. (Not fresh though) Overall experience was great with just the quality of the freshness not quite up to par. I would come here again since the portions were so affordable and the service was quick, but it probably won't be my first choice. I'd like it if they would turn on the AC a bit more. Slightly too warm.

  • Lee S.

Average, Americanized sushi place. The Chirashi sushi I had had large portions of lower grade fish, and only yellowtail, tuna and salmon. I didn't try the rolls but that might be a better choice because of the lower grade fish used. The food was 3 stars but the service was indifferent and slow so I am giving it two stars. It is ironic that Sushi Tomo is within sight of Fuki Sushi, consistently one of the best choices for sushi on the peninsula.

OK Sushi in the South Bay. I'm really picky about my sushi but heard that Sushi tomo was good a good spot in Palo Alto. Ordered: Philly roll Edamami The Philly roll was OK, I didn't feel as though the salmon was super fresh. The Edamami was a bit salty. Clean restaurant including restrooms, lots of seating space. Skip it.

Extremely poor service. There were not many customers in the restaurant but we were seated and ignored for 15 minutes. Then the order taker seemed annoyed that she had to take our order. Food came in stages one person at a time --the last person did not get their food (sushi). We finally got the wait persons attention and she had forgotten the tell the sushi maker to make it. Wait another 10 minutes for that to come. Food was ok but will never go again because of the service (or lack thereof).

After killing some time at Goodwill up the street, I wanted to grab a bite to eat before I went to school. So, I saw this place and decided to give it a go. They had just opened for dinner service at 5pm and it was empty. So, I took a look at their takeout menu and settled on #1 dinner box, which was chicken teriyaki, tempura, and Cali rolls with salad and rice for $10.95. But, with tax and tip, I paid around $15. The guy who greeted me when I entered was busy taking a phone order, so luckily, another employee came to take my order and to cashier as well. I then went to use the restroom, which was very clean and it smelled nice maybe a little too much fragrance though. I came out and sat down to wait for my order. Only one person had came in and sat at the sushi boat. I waited for less than 15 mins and my food was finally ready. The chicken was bland and could've used more teriyaki sauce. I was really disappointed with the pieces of shrimp tempura. There was way too much batter and they were soggy. But, the broccoli, carrot, and yam were ok. The salad was your usual house salad. Nothing special. The Cali rolls weren't the best. They tasted off like they were sweet. Overall, I'd suggest trying other Japanese restaurants in the area. This wouldn't be my first choice. Prices seem a little steep. Service was ok. They do have their own little parking lot. But, I'd suggest just parking on the street if you can. It seems easier that way.

I went to this place one ridiculously aweful time. The sushi was sub standard. The tables were sticky. Okay I'd try to let those go. We waited 25 minutes JUST for our Miso soup! This was lunchtime on a Thursday. Unacceptable. Our bento boxes showed up 10 minutes later. We ate, and paid without a tip (tips are optional for those who don't know that!). Two minutes later as we're getting ready to leave, I hear a knock on the window. The owner had chased us down and asked why we didn't give a tip. We told him why. His reply was "well I guess I just won't serve you the next time you come here" which made me and my coworker livid! We exchanged a number of four letter words with him and then left. We told our coworkers at the office what happened, and they told us they experienced the same thing. In fact, our HR person said he chased them down even after they left a tip, because he wanted a bigger tip! This place is rude, the food is sub standard, and they are insulting to say the least. The BBB needs to look into this owner's behavior, seriously.

I was skeptical of the poor reviews of this place, thinking maybe it was more to do with the service than the food - but nope, the food is pretty bad. I got the chicken teriyaki / gyoza / tempura bento, and while the gyoza and tempura weren't great, they were moderately tasty. The chicken was almost inedible though - rubbery and tasteless, I threw most of it away. Very disappointing.

  • David C.

I feel bad giving them one star, but they should feel bad serving me old, spoiled fish. NOT FRESH. Those are the best words I can use to describe this place. I got 3 Makis: Shrimp Tempura, California, and Negihama. All pretty standard fare. Even the fake crab in the california roll tasted very off. I don't blame the sushi chefs. In fact I feel sorry for them that their talents are going to waste on such poor ingredients. Shame on the owners and really..the whole situation is such a shame. They have a prime location in downtown PA. I would go there 4x a week for lunch if they had quality product. I won't be coming back unless this place goes under new management.

Tofu house near by was closed on Sunday :( so try sushi Tomo instead. would be 3 star, but minus 1 star for poor service chicken and salmon teriyaki, tempura were good, deep fried spicy tuna & california roll were average don't get their salmon skin rolls... it's dry and no taste... they weren't too busy, but the waiter never once came by.... Food was ok for that price...

I've liked this place for years. I always thought the sushi was B quality, but the prices were great so it was fine. In 2012 they raised the prices ($2 plates are now $3, $3 plates are now $4, etc.) and now I can't overlook the issues with quality. At these prices I'd rather go to one of the many restaurants with excellent quality fish. Farewell, Sushi Tomo, I think you saw my last visit.

This is my first and last time at this restaurant. Was looking for sushi on University Avenue and discovered this place on the corner. I was already skeptical about going in since I saw only one customer inside and 5 workers standing around but decided to give it a chance. Ordered salmon, hamachi, unagi and maguro, plus a spider roll. The only thing that tasted decent was the unagi, but how can you mess up on unagi, right? The other fish was not fresh at all. Everything tasted like it was thawed from frozen and there was no taste. On top of that, the crab in the spider roll was stale and bitter, definitely not fresh at all. I was so turned off I just wanted to get out of there. If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. It was just that bad. I left very dissatisfied and still hungry!

My son likes this place for their avocado roll and miso soup. So we came here a few times. We call it the sushi place with bad service. Chicken teriyaki is not good. Chicken smells bad and does not taste freshly cooked. Salmon teriyaki is good size and tasted good. Other rolls are average. Their tempuras are good. Crispy and super hot. The servers are clueless about restaurant service. This is a 2.5 star place.

Worse restaurant i ever been too. I came with my high school friends, it was pretty busy, sat down, took like 30 min for the waitress to come to my table so i can order, another 30 min to get the water i asked for, 40 min waiting time for the food to come. Since my friends only came to company me to eat, they didnt really order anything but the waiter forced us to order up to $36, and my friend felt bad and wanted to leave but i said no and end up ordering more... After we're finished, we went to the cashier and wanting to pay separately but they said NO, and i couldnt charge my debit because they say theres a minimum of 15 bucks.... and i was wondering why the bill was way more than i expected, and it turned out that they added the tip themselves to my bill.. how rude, i didnt want to give them too much tip cuz of their exteremely bad, rude service but they added 5 bucks to my bill anyway, so we all had to pay for it. HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED and wont be coming back.

Just terrible. My measly spider roll for $6.50 contained close-to-rotten avocado and the unsavory parts of crab. The boy didn't like his sushi and sashimi either. I will say that the bento box looked and tasted decent, from my few bites of chicken teriyaki. But please, this place is not very good AND I don't think it's all that cheap.

Lunch review Chirashi~ was a delicious assortment of mixed sashimi on top of a huge heaving of rice fit for two people..fish were cut really thick and the portions are gigantic. fish was fresh. pork katsu-don~ well made donburi with the egg perfectly nestled on top of the breaded pork and again...a huge serving of rice.. This place must have a huge rice bill for they were overly generous with it. great place to snack on when hungry.. 3/5 judochops

The food is actually pretty decent here, it won't blow your mind away, and it's nothing spectacular...but the portions are generous and the prices are dirt cheap for sushi around this area. I honestly don't think there is a cheaper sushi spot in town. The rolls are cheap and made to order, I tried the white tiger, dragon, crazy horse, and yami yami. My favorites were the crazy horse and yami yami, they were good rolls stuffed with plenty of fish. The yami yami roll is similar to the crazy horse except its fried tempura style on the outside. The rolls are very large and pretty cheap. I would suggest ordering any roll without the crab meat, because that stuff doesn't taste too good. But the rolls with fish inside are delicious and large! The sushi pieces are also generous, but I didn't like their sushi rice because it was a tad hard. The freshness of the fish was decent, not the best sushi place for fresh fish, but its decent quality and generous portions. The bento box is dirt cheap at $11 for dinner. And you get 3 item choices with it, including sashimi if you like. They even gave us slices of butterfish sashimi with the bento box, it wasn't the best butterfish sashimi in the world, but it's decent and definitely beats the regular tuna they serve to you. The conveyor belt style with the floating boats on water at the bar is pretty cool. Okay, the service was slow...there were maybe 3 other tables sitting inside the restaurant on a Thursday night near closing time, so you would think they'd provide us faster service so they could go home, but nope it was still slow. The two sushi chefs behind the bar weren't very talkative or even smiled at us, but they did take our orders and made our sushi while cleaning up at the same time. For the price of the entrees and sushi, I don't think you can complain about eating here. Service is slow, but the food is actually decent. The tempura was okay, the sushi was decent, and some of the rolls are good. It's really not fair to compare this place with other sushi places around the area because the prices are way cheaper here. So if you just want some Japanese food to fill your tummy and don't care much about the best sushi, then this might be the cheap eat to go to. Otherwise, head across the street for better sushi.

I come here for lunch a lot but only because it's fast and cheaper than the other sushi place next to my office. The sushi bar doesn't offer many choices and the food is a little bland but it satisfies my sushi cravings. The staff is super nice though!

Years ago this was my friends favorite place. Last night he said, he'll never go back. Side salad definitely not fresh or organic, wilted head lettuce tossed into a tiny bowl. The cold tofu was not any better, medium texture served w/cold noodle sauce. I definitely have had better. For a Tuesday evening, service was slow. Not a place to revisit. Definitely not a memorable Japanese cuisine. BTW - It's not ran by Chinese people, it's Korean...............

Unsurpassed... rudeness. Honestly. Is there anything to recommend a place this miserably lacking in terms of service? We ordered some sushi. It came and wasn't the way I expected, so I accepted my mistake, kept it, and asked the waiter for what I'd wanted. He never came back to the table. NEVER. Not to say they didn't have what I wanted and wouldn't make it, not to see if we wanted anything else, not to bring the check, not to pick up our credit card. He ran away. Would not look at us. Hid. When we did manage to find him, head buried in a bus bin (it was not busy), he would not tell me why he never came back, why he failed to tell us the kitchen wouldn't make the sushi. Would not apologize. Would not acknowledge we went without most of dinner. We questioned the woman at the desk in front. She insisted there was no manager and the waiter was new. Explained nothing. Gave no apology, no acknowledgement. As we left, more potential customers were arriving. They inquired how we'd liked it. We gave a brief version of the story. They high-tailed it across the street - which you should also do. The food we did get was absolutely bland. This place is bizarre.

This place is nothing special. The prices are fairly low, but what you get what you pay for. Service is terrible, and the waiters seem to hate their jobs and the people around them. I went here with my boss and I asked for a box for my bento box. I hadn't eaten most of it, so there was quite a bit left. The waitress brought over a tiny tiny square box. I asked her if I could have a larger box. She gave me the stinkeye and walked away with the box in hand. She then proceeded to get a water pitcher and fill up our water. She eyed my food critically and said, "I think it could fit in the small box." WTF. Okay, fine, I said, give me the small box then. She walked away and began filling water for every other patron in the restaurant. We then flagged down a different waiter and asked him to get us a box. Didn't say "large box", we just said "a box, please". HE went to get a water pitcher and fill up everyone's water. IS IT SO IMPOSSIBLE TO GET A FRIGGEN BOX BEFORE YOU FILL WATER? I could literally see the stack of boxes just lining the walls from where I sat. Anyway, the food itself is not terrible, it's just limp and nothing special.

Yes on the slow service. I'm here right now for lunch. Things started off good but once the lunch rush happened they got overwhelmed. The waitresses are running hard but they just don't have enough of them. I had the chicken teriyaki and it was very good - my second time here but I have not tried the sushi. Other than the understaffing it was a good meal. Just cant be in a rush.

Where should I begin. First it's not that expensive so I guess I shouldn't expect much. When we asked for more time to order we didn't see or weren't able to get the attention of the waitress and as such it took awhile for us to actually order. Waitress forgot to serve our miso soup and salad. Waitress brought two tempura sauces but not the tonkatsu sauce. The real odd thing is that the sushi chef lost his temper at the other waiter and though a towel down on the counter in front of other customers that included small children and acutally used profanity! Totally uncalled for. The food itself was just OK. I doubt

I know this place gets a bad wrap - and it's understandable - the service can be slow and rude, and the food is inconsistent. That said, there is a way to eat here and be pleasantly surprised. In fact, after we started figuring out these "secrets," we now eat here about once a week and we even bring guests. Try these tips: 1. Don't eat here on a very hot day, there is lack of air conditioning and the entire place is lit by halogen lights. Heat + sushi = not good. 2. If you don't want to deal with the service, eat at the boats. The boats are a BIG hit with kids, you can eat instantly, and most of the time, it sure beats McDonald's drive-thru. We had a friend who was in an insane rush eat dinner here, and was well satisfied, in 7.5 minutes. Sushi was fresh and clean. 3. If you do eat at the boats, go early, when everything is still nice and cool. If you can't time it to opening, then don't eat from the boats, just order from the sushi chef in front of you, and you'll get fresh, delicious sushi. Sushi chefs are very quick and competent, great service. Our faves: dragon roll, cali roll, spicy tomo, philly. We don't do big slabs of raw here, but smaller amounts are just fine.

I'm a little sad to say that I have been here more than once. I have no idea why I returned. This place definitely isn't horrible but I have no incentive to ever go back. The prices are on the higher end of a regular japanese restaurant without meeting any of the quality or uniqueness. The decor is quite tacky on the outside although I will give them props for drawing attention to people with their neon signs. Overall just a mehh place that I don't want to spend my money at.

We set out to eat at Fuki Sushi across the street, but on a Sunday brunch-time it was closed. So we found this place by accident. We sat at the boat counter. Decent selection. Very low prices as I thought Palo Alto would be more $. Everything was well, A.O.K.! Contrary to other yelpers, everything I ate was fresh. No complaints from us..........try it out!

Meh. I went into this meal with low expectations, which were met. Based on the Yelp reviews, I decided to play it safe (mainly due to the multiple reports of food poisoning!), so I got the spicy tuna roll and the salmon+avocado roll. I figured it would be hard to mess either of those up, but that spicy tuna was akin to cat food. The salmon roll was good enough, hence the second star. The service was mediocre at best (the aloof waiter required a lot of flagging for ordering, refilling, etc). But, overall do-able on a budget, especially if you go with good company like I had. I agree with other Yelpers though, spend the extra money and go to Fuki Sushi across the street.

Their combination dinners are the best deal and maybe with a cold Sapporo can make you feel much better... Their Green Tea is good too, nice aroma.. Their rolls are decently priced, as I am also fan of fresh food, their sashimi is tasty and well it is a good place to try some things you haven't before... One last thing should you & your parties dine in, the services can be a little slower, do not expect their service to be too attentive and they don't have the biggest smiles if you know what I mean...

There are already tons of reviews so mine probably won't made a huge difference in the overall rating, but I just wanted to chime in and defend Sushi Tomo. My mom and I come here whenever we want a nice quick meal that isn't too expensive. We used to love Miyake on University Ave before the sake bombing students made it an unpleasant destination. I mean, there is a time and a place for sake bombing, and a lunch date with your mom is certainly not the time nor the place. Anyways, the sushi boats are fun, we have never had a problem getting a table, the prices are reasonable (especially on the bento boxes) and they make a great miso soup. Probably not a place to take someone on a first date, but I would grab lunch here any day!

  • Noel M.

The sashimi rocks because of the large slices of fish but all the servings are large here. I can definitely do without some of their more "creative" rolls though. It's hard to get a refill on drinks or any service at all so I highly recommend sitting at the bar but that means sitting with no elbow room. This still hasn't stopped me from going.

What really excites me about this place is that the spicy rolls are actually spicy. Now, I am a spice elitist and it is quite difficult to impress me in that department. However, I do consider myself to be capable of judging objectionably. I ordered two spicy rolls: the salmon roll and the tomo roll. I was starving! The portions were respectable and pricing was reasonable (between $10-$12 for both rolls, not including tip). Usually, when I order a spicy roll at any given sushi eatery, it is necessary for me to add more spice with a healthy dollop of wasabi. Naturally, I continued this tradition at Sushi Tomo and ALMOST questioned my decision. However, I soon found the tearing of my eyes and clearing of my sinuses to be rather comforting (signs of a true spice-aholic). With satisfyingly speedy service, I'll add this to my list of places to go for a quick bite.

Bad service. slow. unfriendly. Then they add 18% tip onto the bill themselves. Won't come back again.

Sushi Tomo has declined rapidly over the years and with Fuki Sushi nearby I am not sure why I ever go here anymore. Just went there for lunch with some coworkers today and the service was TERRIBLE (the owner/woman working at the front made matters even worse). The waiter had lots of problems taking our order, delivered the wrong items and even brought some of our dishes to other tables. We had to flag them down to get service. They even forgot to bring out some of our dishes. We got the bill and as we left we were chased out by the waiter who (in super broken english) demanded we go back and pay more since they forgot to charge us for some dish. With the terrible service it was impossible to tell what they were charging us for. I paid the $6 extra under protest since we would have left a much smaller tip if we knew this. Told the owner/woman that the service was terrible, but she didnt care - just wanted her $6. For the want of $6 Sushi Tomo has lost a customer for life. NEVER GOING TO RETURN. The food was pretty bad too. Fish tasted like it was almost going bad and had been in the freezer for a while. Its cheap for a reason.

I've been to this restaurant twice now. The food is okay if you are downtown and want to hurry in and eat (the food comes out pretty quickly). The reason for my 3 stars is that, this place is not kid friendly. We took our at the time 18 month old son here and there was not one high chair, my niece was also with us and there was no place for her carseat. The waiter that was taking our order was not very helpful (but I think it was because she couldn't speak English well). It was hard to understand. We ordered some rolls and a bento box which was all very good. The waiter never came to ask how we were or check to see if we needed anything else. I ended up having to wave them down a few times in order to get water and a fork for my son. Overall, it has decent food, but the customer service is not great at all and its definitely not a place to bring small children.

When my parents relocated to SoPA, we started going to Sushi Tomo more often than Miyake which is closer to my home. Hands-down, Sushi Tomo has THE BEST SALMON EVER. I have eaten at lots of local sushi places (Miyake, Han, Dashi, Kampai, Fuki, etc.) and NONE have better fresh, generous slices of unctious, delicious salmon. It's so good, you could eat it without soy sauce or ginger or wasabe...it's that good on its own. Of course, don't miss the hand rolls (spicy tuna and fried oyster are my faves), any of their maki, great miso soup, shatteringly crisp tempura, and plentiful piles of wakame salad, all at VERY REASONABLE PRICES. Oh heck---my mouth's watering just *thinking* about all the scrumptious deliciousity of everything on their menu!

I'm with Ryan G. on this. Why are people 2 and 3 starring this place? I'm pretty sure I found the right place on Yelp, and I'm also quite sure this is some of the best sushi I've had since moving to the Bay Area. My girlfriend and I went here and wound up splitting three special rolls (and I had a beer) for $21 including tip. I'd say that's not bad at all, especially given that we had some of their more unique rolls. We didn't try any of their hot food, so I can't speak to that. But if you're into sushi, you'll love it. We had one that contained real crab meat (none of that crabstick junk) and avocado and was topped with scallops and roe. It was a unique taste and the quality was fresh. Another one with salmon and yellowtail was an excellent example of the high quality of their food. While on the topic of food, though, the reason I didn't give five stars was due to the size of their rolls. We got one roll in which the slices were no less than three inches in diameter. Sorry, but that's kind of ridiculous. The atmosphere isn't amazing; but the unpretentious air could be considered a pro. You can go here for a casual romantic dinner or with a few friends. I'm not really sure what people's expectations are for service. We were seated immediately, the waiter asked for our order and came back when we told him to give us another couple minutes. He gave us the check shortly after we finished, and all was good. So in conclusion, everyone should stop "hating on" Sushi Tomo. Live a little; sample some weird rolls : )

UPDATE: Sometime in the last few months they must have changed there supplier of imitation crab because it is HORRIBLE now! Not that imitation crab is ever delicious but the new stuff somehow manages to be dry and wet at the same time. The texture is not appealing and they've managed to destroy even a simple California roll. Very disappointing! The only reason I keep coming back here is because my coworkers pay for my meals!! *** I've gone here often for lunch. The sushi is NOT exceptional, in fact, it is rather lousy especially if you are sitting at the bar. The service is very slow and they definitely don't follow "The customer is always right" code. Multiple times we have had very poor service and left a less than 15% tip. Now, I know that tips are almost mandatory; however, as I've seen it, a tip is something that is left for providing a good service. Poor service = poor tip. They actually had the nerve to ask why we left a low tip! I actually went home and checked my credit card statement because I really thought they were going to over-charge me! They didn't but my co-workers and I have decided it's time to find a new lunch spot...somewhere were they actually deserve a 15% tip!!

The food in this place is okay, but the service is another story. I went with my family of five and the waitress asked three of the five of us what we wanted and forgot the other two. We had to chase down another waiter to get our order together. When we received the check I was shocked to see a gratuity imposed upon my bill. So when I inquired about this charge I was told to read the fine print. She was very very rude. When my aunt said, fine we are splitting the bill then - she said again "you take care of that - it's not my problem. read the fine print we only give one check" I didn't know I was signing a contract to eat in a restaurant - they probably made this policy of auto gratuitiy because they would never get a dime of tip otherwise. Never Never Never again will I step into this place and I hope they go under in this economic crisis- they deserve to!

Firstly, the prices are cheap and the portions are pretty good. The quality might not be like Fuki Sushi across the street, but the prices definitely make up for it. The teriyaki chicken is great, and the sashimi/suhi is decent. I come here all the time just to take-out food.

Hey 7.00 bento box? you can't beat that.. I got number 16 .. its like sashimi (2 pieces, decent size) tampura, and a fried mackeral.. it wasnt bad at all.. and the service was great.. the guy was good at coming and refilling our tea.. and the employees were pleasant. it's a quiet tucked away restaurant.. for cheap fast sushi, this place is great.. now if you want the high end stuff, cross the street to Fuki -Yuki..hahah.. only down fall was parking , the lot is tiny... i had to park on the street.

I went with my friend, who already has a predisposition to hating the place. We sat at the tables and ordered food. She decided she wanted to grab something off the sushi boats while we waited, because she was hungry. Now, OTHER sushi boat places have no problem when customers grab sushi off the boats. In fact, most encourage it. But the sushi chef at sushi tomo yelled "NO SORRY NO!" in front of the whole restaurant. It was the rudest thing ever with no explanation. Frankly, I was embarrassed for my friend. Anyways, our bill came out to 32.90 and we left 33 dollars, hurriedly rushing out the door. Since not tipping is against my morales, I left my waiter a note that told him we felt disrespected and they should work on that. Other restaurant waiters would have stood up for the customer, and possibly offered something complimentary. Not here though. The waiter proceeded to chase us outside with a menu. "It says right here that dining room cannot take sushi off the boats" "Well, maybe you guys need a clearer sign or something." I retorted. "I can't help my stupid co workers comments or my managers rules" He replied "Maybe you should tell your manager your customers are unhappy" I say "I can't do that" He said, approaching closer. "Well, maybe next time I WILL" I reply "Maybe next time you shouldn't come here" He replied. At which point he was wayyy too close to my car and my friend shut the door in his face. The fact of the matter is, I'm sure his manager would love to hear this. Unless the manager has no since of what customer service is... which is entirely possible since this seems to be a common theme judging by what others have posted.

This is a great sushi place to go for lunch. They have rotating boats filled with sushi rolls during lunch and the prices are reasonable. Definitely try the Catepillar rolls. I've tried to find something similar at other sushi places but the one they make here is fantastic.

IF YOU READ ANY OF THIS REVIEW READ THE FIRST SENTENCE: This Sushi Tomo (on Camino Way) is much much better than the Sushi Tomo on University Ave. There I've said it. Now if you don't believe me, try both and come back online and mark this review as useful because for whatever reason the food at the Camino Way location is just markedly better than the University Ave one. Or just don't ever go to the University Ave Sushi Tomo. But do come to Sushi Tomo on Camino Way under certain circumstances that I'll describe now: 1. To eat relatively cheap, pretty good sushi by yourself 2. To eat relatively cheap, pretty good sushi with a small to moderately-sized group 3. To eat relatively cheap, pretty good sushi elsewhere because you ordered take-out You get the point. This place does not have the best sushi in the area, but they might have the best (lowest) price-to-quality ratio of sushi places in the area; that's why I go here every once in a while. If you're a hardcore sashimi person, don't go here. Spend more money and go somewhere that's going to give you higher quality. If on the other hand, you want to get an assortment of regular and specialty rolls, come check this place out (BUT SERIOUSLY MAKE SURE YOU COME TO THIS ONE AND NOT THE ONE ON UNIVERSITY AVE). I think you'll be satisfied with both some good-tasting rolls and a pretty cheap bill.

Sushi Tomo is one of my favorite sushi places. Low price, great rolls, sushi chefs remember you. I'm not a fan of moving boats anywhere, so I order off the menu and get a far superior product. If you sit at the tables, be prepared for spotty service (OK, spotty was being kind). This location is far better than the one on University Ave. Having read all the other reviews, I don't know where all the haters came from. I went here once a week when I lived in the burbs.

This place is crap. The quality of sushi and the service is terrible. I keep asking for green tea and never gave me any. When I finally ask for the check I gave less than 10% tip. The waiter come over and says, it a 15% tip minimum. My response to him was I only gave what I think your service deserves and walked out. Asshole waiter. Dont come here

It's really hit or miss here. Tonight, the sushi was crazy good. I think it depends on the shipment of fish, the sushi chef, how the moon is aligned. The meal tonight was a five star meal for the price, but I had to knock a few stars off because of the unpredictability. The fish quality was excellent from the saba to the hamachi; the vegetable yasai was delicious and the rolls were perfectly assembled. Truthfully, we vowed to never go again after our last experience, but a couple friends of ours are fans of the place so we went with them out of politeness and we are glad we did but it's really a crapshoot. I do have a tip however...stay away from the boats and order rolls from the sushi chef. At least this ensures a freshly assembled meal.

I wanted to weigh in on this place because of all the negative comments regarding their customer service. I've been to Sushi Tomo twice in the past couple of weeks and both times found the staff to be fairly attentive and friendly. The stories of people being chased out to the parking lot when not tipping at the bar still amaze me though and I just can't believe they would stoop to that level.... That aside, the sushi here is basically average fare at an affordable price. They put a decent variety of rolls and nigiri out on the boats as long as you come during a peak time (6-7pm for dinner). If you come after 8pm or so, order directly from the chef as everything passing by on the boats has been around the moat a few too many times. The last time I was here I sat next to two people on a date that was absolutely painful to observe. Here's an excerpt: Guy: So, do you know anybody that Twitters? Girl: Umm, you mean like a bird? Guy: No, like micro-blogging. Girl: (puzzled) Oh....no. I think I'm going to take the rest of my California roll to go if you're all done.

This was truly the most repulsive sushi I have ever had. The fish, no doubt, has been frozen and thawed countless times. It has no texture and almost no taste. The little taste it has is bad. To add to it, the rice is crispy and the service nothing to cheer about. What a horrible experience.

  • Linda F.

Their combination dinners are good but if you take a table for dinner, do not expect the service to be very attentive unless they are slow. If you want sushi, and your group is not too big, sit at the bar and eat off the boats. The sushi chefs are very professional and creative... if you do not see what you want on a boat, ask them to make it for you. They seem to enjoy a little challenge and if it is a special order, they seem to serve a larger portion. Always fresh sushi. I am a fan.

Sushi Tomo is pretty yummy for the price range. It's close to work so my co-workers and I come here when we're craving sushi. Their great deal is the sashimi because they give you huge pieces. Their agadeshi tofu is really good. Everything here is pretty big portion for a great price. Parking can be tough as the parking lot is really small. You can try and find parking on the street.

I love this place regradless. The sashmii bowl is my favorite. The price is reasoanable. The quailty of service is good, there is a waiter that is exteremly good but when we don't have him we are usually screwed over when it comes to getting refills of ice water, so time I will even say "who do i have to f to get a friggin ice water" And I get really thirsty when I eat sushi. I love the seaweesd salad and the cherry blossom roll is amazing. It can get packed which is annoying and it worsens the service. Also go after thety have been for dinner like 5:30 because I have a feeling they use all there leftovers from lunch.. blah

This place does not know what customer service is. I've given it many chances (because the food is cheap and somewhat decent for the price), but... STRIKE THREE. Sushi Tomo puts no value in their customers, and because of that, they will lose them.

The customer service here is LACKING....this is my second time here and I will not be going back based on the poor service. The first time I went there I thought they were having an off day...plus I was eating at the sushi bar, so its low maintenance right? but I didn't even get anyone to give me an option to for a drink until half way through my experience.... I went today, sat at the sushi boat bar, a staff memeber gave me water after I requested it, I ate, was done, waiting for anyone to see I was ready to leave, no one on the wait staff figured it out so I waved down someone and ask for my bill...went up to the register to pay, and the guy at the counter said to me "what, no tip?" and I said "no, you only brought me water, never checked back with me" and he said "I brought you water, so you no tip???" very aggressively.....hmmmm.... just my experience there....puttin' it out there for you to make an informed decision about eating there... See Sheena h's review also.... particularly about the guy at the register chasing down some customers for "tips"

    (1)
  • sheena h.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I have to state that I don't like raw fish. Yep, I pretty much find it not to be to my taste (something about the icky consistency). That said, I eat a lot of California rolls. Discovered Sushi Tomo with a friend and find that I can grab a quick lunch relatively cheap. It runs about $10 w/ TIP (the caps will be explained later in this review) for a California roll, edamames, 3 potstickers and iced tea. All from the little boats. Although not great, the food hits the spot and there's never been anything disturbing in it (knock wood). The waiters tend to be slow bringing things like iced tea or a fork (chopstick challenged person that I am). So why 2 stars? Well...they have this really weird thing about tipping. I personally know someone who was CHASED through the parking lot by the chick at the register asking why she hadn't tipped. The converstion went something like this: Hostess/Register person: "Weren't you happy with the service? You didn't tip.". Friend "Oops forgot as I'm having a busy day. I was at the sushi bar (she got nothing but water from the waiter). Here's a couple of bucks." When she tells me the story I think it odd, but given we were in there once or twice a week around that time I think perhaps they genuinely did care what she thought of the service. That is until I see register dude chase 2 guys down one day. I roll down my car window faster than a rabid squirrel just in time to see the pursued diners say "look we were at the sushi bar and had no waiter service but if it's that big of a deal here's $2". Later I come to find out that this is a regular practice. In fact, I've personally observed that the sushi chef will nod to the register dude if someone has left the tip at the table. If not, and they don't leave one up front, register dude runs after them. Wtf? This sounds like something out of a bad movie. So why do I still go? Because the California rolls are good, it's convenient when I'm in a hurry and it's somewhat awesome entertainment to watch them literally chase off customers. Update: Went again today and I think it will be the last time. Once again, I had to practically beg for a fork, ice tea and a bowl for the edamame shells. If they are going to insist on chasing people for tips, the least they can do is provide a bit of service to the chopstick-challenged thirsty people. In addition, the California rolls weren't nearly as good and the whole place smelled way too fishy. (And I don't mean the good smell in a nice sushi place. I mean the holy cow it's a hot day and that poor fish is baking in the sun on a hot beach smell). Also, the women who work there are downright rude. They act like they are doing me a favor taking my money. I don't expect anyone to kiss my butt but at least try not to look like you sucked a lemon when I do something as simple as ask for the check. I'm dropping my rating from 3 to 1; this place is going downhill fast. Update: Yesterday we ended up here again. Our bill comes to $10 and were told we had to order more food since there's now a $7.50 per person minimum. This is on the menu, which you don't see if you're at the sushi bar. So in summary: - $7.50 per person unposted mimimum & insistence that you order to go food to meet that amount. - Virtually mandatory tipping or they chase after you - $20 minimum to use a credit card So this begs the question, how the hell do these people stay in business?! I know you're thinking, it's because you keep going back. Well, I've done so since two of my friends love the place and I love my friends. That said, I'll be checking out Yelp for new places to go from now on.

Went here on friday with a bunch of ladys from work, ordered a california roll, a terriyaki roll and an order of ebi. It took 20 minutes to get the food, then one bite into my ebi and spitt it out omg this fish is bad!! I smell it and it smells funky, I call the waiter and say Im real sorry but I cant eat this, its bad, it smells and tastes bad. He comes back with a small plate and takes it away. Five minutes later he comes back and says I'm sorry but we arent going to credit you for the ebi, my manager said she would eat it. UMMM EXCUSE ME?? WTF???? IF she is used to eating rotten fish cool, but when I pay for my food, I expect that I should be able to eat it and not have cramps half an hour later. What a piece of crap manager! Well we wont be going here anymore, back to sushiko or somewhere where they actually want repeat customers!!!

I would give this place ZERO STARS if I could!!The sushi is gross here and the people working here/owners are RUDE--they actually kicked us out of here without warning when we were still trying to order food, because they were closing after lunch. JOKE! Don't go here, just don't! Take your $ and buy yourself some sushi from Whole Foods if you have to.

Yelp please create a zero star rating! Sushi Tomo (both locations and this one especially) deserve it. Their food is f^cking disgusting! Last time at this place wasn't so bad but the sushi was dried up and almost made me puke on the spot! WTF is it too much to ask to attempt to make food properly? I would actually rather walk across broken glass and be ran over by a two ton truck trying to eat dog food than go back to this place. To make it worse we got our drinks and waited, waited and waited some more- about 45 minutes of waiting so after getting to small plates from the boats we decided to bail- then we were given a bill for $15????? We were talking it over and this waiter (who must have had beltones on super high) literally flies across the room to point out their bullsh%t $7.50 per person minimum charge. So we said eff it and ordered enough food to merit $15 - the tempura that was presented was AWFUL- I mean like there are probably feral cats that would walk away from this crap. I will never and I mean NEVER as long as I live enter this restaurant. PS the person in my group advised me that all the employees were speaking Chinese for whatever that is worth- still no excuse for crap food.

An okay sushi restaurant... the rolls on the sushi bar are boring and flavorless. However they have some killer rolls, but grab a table instead and avoid the sushi bar.

We go there almost every other week with the family for sushis on Friday night. The sushis are fairly good, fresh. The chefs behind the sushi bars are usually very friendly....but the service can be fairly bad. The worst is the woman at the reception: aven after more than 4 years of going there regularly, it is almost as we walk there for the first time!

I met up with my college friend here. It was all right. I got a bento box with tempura, pork, and california roll. The price was around $10. We were eating a long time and it actually got pretty packed around 7 pm on a Thurs, and they brought us the check even though we weren't done chatting.

I really love this place and I wasn't expecting much because it looks a bit like a chain. But don't be fooled, the fish is FANTASTIC and I'm VERY PICKY about high quality fish. I think it's some of the best in the whole bay area. Very fresh tasting. The portions are large as well. The miso soup is my favorite of any I've had and the green tea is really just top notch. A step up from the usual. This is my second yelp review -- I felt compelled to rate this place because it's so delicious and reasonably priced that I feel very lucky to have this place in Palo Alto. I see the other reviews complain about the service. For what it's worth, I've been there a number of times and they've always been responsive and friendly. I'm giving this place a five because it's so delicious and yet cheap!

If you are looking for a high end sushi place, this is not it. If you can accept it for what it is: an inexpensive decent quality Japanese restuarant, it's a pretty good place to eat. The price is very affordable, and the fish is pretty fresh. The bento boxes are good deals too, because you can get quite a bit of food for not very much money. A big plus: I really like the fact that they have the sushi belt with boats carrying small dishes, which I can't find in any other sushi place in the area. This really gives me the flexibility to try a variety of dishes without stuffing myself.

We kept thinking we could figure a way around the poor service. Even though there were only two other tables eating in the restaurant, last nights waiter took the service from aloof to rude. We asked for water when we ordered (this place is odd and they will often never give you water and definitely never a refill) and we never got our water. The food was practically catapulted onto our table and he walked away before I could say anything. He walked past us several times and I kept trying to get his attention, but he seemed to be purposefully ignoring us and wouldn't even look in our direction. We are officially done with this place. There are lots of other places to eat on the Peninsula.

Tomo Sushi is tucked away on a back street, almost directly behind Fuki Sushi on El Camino Real. It's almost like the "back-alley" version of the fancier restaurant - which in many ways it is. First off, it's a boat restaurant where a ring of boats circles the chefs like hungry wooden sharks. This has two draw-backs: 1) The chefs only put out "safe" sushi - i.e. rolls with cooked ingredients so the amateur sushi types will feel safe 2) The dishes in front of you have been on that boat for who-knows-how-long and may or not be terribly fresh. Still, you can order things from the chefs ... if you can get their attention. The fish isn't the greatest I've ever had, but for a cheap and fast sushi lunch, Tomo Sushi does the trick. A heads-up: Their parking lot is notoriously small and poorly designed . Get there early or plan on street parking.

Sushi should always be fresh. I got sick the last time I went here and I blame the Oregon Roll. If you are a local college student who is on a budget then I understand your cheap sushi needs. But for all you sushi connoisseurs you have no excuse there is WAY better sushi out there.

I think this place is pretty good for the money. You can get a pretty good bento box for about $11.00. they also give you 4 pieces of sashimi instead of 2 like other places. The fish quality is pretty good as well. Contrary to other reviews here I've found the service to be respectable.

Eh - convenience and price are major draws for Sushi Tomo. The atmosphere is alright and the sushi boats can be alluring. More recently it seems as if pirates have taken 'booty' off the boats; the last time I visited, there were hardly any fish on the boats! Generally the fish is fresh (if not a bit frozen). Be wary of lingering dishes on the boats - you don't know how long it's been making its rounds! Definitely much more affordable than Fuki Sushi, but at the cost of true authentic sushi.

This must be the worst sushi place I have been to..The sushi served here wasn't all that great. The rolls were cut poorly, but it was at least edible. The service was very poor - the waiters took a long time to come to our table to take our order and they didn't even bother to give us our dishes to eat our sushi until I reminded them..

    (2)
  • Sai S.

You get what you pay for. Yes, the serving sizes are large. Yes, it's cheap. But multiple times I have had "sashimi" that was a day old and frozen and then warmed up a bit. Unacceptable. I think they could be a 3 star "cooked only" sushi place, but the freezing and call it sashimi the next day is plain sinister.

I'm updating my rating to 4 stars, because i feel their customer service has improved IMMENSELY in the last few months (maybe it was my review that did it... who knows, ooooooooooooo). The hostess is polite, and smiles. They're very attentive even during busy lunch hours. The sushi chefs are even enjoyable to talk to. They still don't proactively give you a straw, but at least now they don't frown when i ask. One hip hip hooray for Sushi Tomo! Keep it up!

  • Hoa Q.

For $7.50 a bento box, you'd be tempted to order something extra just in case it's not enough, but don't! The boxes are big with fresh tempura and sashimi. Hot tea is free. Great for lunches during work as the service is very fast. Carpool will make lunch more enjoyable.

Went with some friends a few weeks ago. The sushi was surprisingly good. I got rainbow rolls, and there were nice cuts of fish on top. The fish wasn't "fishy" at all, and it practically melted in my mouth... not too chewy. One friend got the sashimi special, and the slices of fish were huge (he said it was delicious). Another friend got some noodles, and he said they were good. We didn't have much of a problem with service, though we got there around closing. There was only like one guy serving the entire place but there were only three tables with people. Final bill was about $25-30/person.

Two cuts below the rest. Came here for lunch today and had the sushi lunch. If you are a cat you might like the fishy odor on the fish but this dog couldn't even finish the lunch. Service was non-responsive to my pointing out that the fish wasn't fresh.

My husband and I used to frequent this restaurant at least once a week because it's on our way home. However since they have changed the servers, service has been extremely slow and inconsistent. I once had to flag down a server to tell him our sushi was done at least 10 min ago and was just sitting at the counter collecting dust. Needless to say, we haven't been back since.

  • Areena M.

Went here with a friends last Friday. I didn't have any choice in the matter, but wish they had chosen a different location. The first thing I noticed is that the A/C couldn't keep up with the scorching temperatures (we were experiencing a heat wave). It didn't even feel like the A/C was on. Second, we sat at our table for over 15 minutes before being visiting by our waitress, who didn't even smile or respond when I said hello (she shared with us that she was upset because of the heat and another party had made a big mess of their table, which she had to clean by herself). I have sympathy for people who are having a rough day, but she wasn't even making an effort to be friendly. She didn't even apologize for the wait! However, the service improved after we placed our orders. Last, the food was ok to mediocre. I had a combination meal (box) with tempura and terriyaki salmon. The salmon was overcooked and didn't taste fresh. Tempura was a little greasy, but ok. Miso soup that came with the meal was fine, but I've had better. The plus sides to this place are that the portions are pretty good size, and the place is cheap. I guess if budget is your primary concern and you don't mind sacrificing service, this is a good place to go. Otherwise, go somewhere else. I will not likely be back.

    (2)
  • Alex G.

We had lunch there today and it was fair. The chicken karaage tasted as if it was battered in tempura, and the Beef Don I had lacked any flavor. My wife had the Katsu Don, which she added a lot of soy sauce due to the lack of any flavor. The one bright spot was the Poki Spicy Roll which was the best dish out of what we tried. It might have been the best because at least it had some flavor. I agree with Kalani O. about the tables. They look like they came from a World Wrapps! (Wasn't a World Wrapps @ that corner before?) I'm not sure if I'd go back.

  • Eric L.

I think most people judge the sushi restaurant by what it looks like on the outside, if you want to pay for the atmosphere that's fine, but im there for the food and thats it... This place has decently fresh sushi that's well under the average market price... for times like these, this sushi place is pretty damn good... I found that they give more sushi meat than any other sushi place i've been to, and like i said its cheap! 20 dollars can get you full off sushi! full you say? yes full!

this el camino sushi tomo is worse than the one in downtown pa. the waiters here have always been pretty rude, and their sushi is never that well-made. if you want japanese, there's definitely better, even in palo alto.

Talking about the sickest sushi I've ever had! We ate here once a year ago, and I remember it was alright, at least it wasn't gross. However, we decided to come here for a quick lunch instead of going to the Sushi Tomo in El camino. I had a salmon nigiri, a unagi hand roll and a spicy tuna roll. I don't know what happened to their quality control, but after our first bite into the salmon nigiri, we knew something is wrong and the sushi cannot be eaten, or we might get really sick. I have NEVER tasted salmon this fishy and spoiled! I took the fish to the sushi chef and told him that something is wrong with the salmon and it's really fishy and not fresh. He took a bite, and told me "Ya, it's fishy, but it's ok to eat." Oh my god, I can't believe that was his response. The head chef that is making the sushi actually admits the fish is fishy but thinks it's ok for people to eat this! Talking about bad quality control! I insisted that this was bad sushi and refused to pay for it, so they did deduct the money from the salmon. I thought at least I could eat the unagi and spicy tuna. And to my suprise, I ended spitting out everything. Unagi was like it came from the garbage, fishy and spoiled. The spicy tuna was tolerable, but I only had one piece because the spicyness may be covering up any spoiled flavor. And if two out of the three sushi I ordered was bad, I probably should eat that. I was sick of telling them how bad all the sushi were. We left and I went home and had a yummy peanut butter jelly sandwich. This place should be shut down, something is certainly wrong with the way they prepare sushi. If I can give a zero star, I would. Forgot to mention that the waitress is a little crazy, she messed up a lot of people's orders. She actually made a mistake and gave some lady a miso soup that she didn't have. The lady had aldready ate it half way, and all of a sudden the waitress realized the mistake, came back and wanted the soup back. Then she saw that the customer had already ate half of the bowl, so she said "forget it, you can just have the soup then. I hope the camera is not watching..." I dont' know if she's just straight out crazy, there is really cameras all around....

I didn't like the service and I didn't think the fish was very fresh. Maybe that's why their sushi is so cheap! Needless to say, only minutes after eating here, my tummy got all gurgly and didn't feel right. Luckily I live in the next town over so it was easy to get home immediately to take care of some "business".

This place is a neat little spot behind another sushi place. The prices are reasonable especially for Palo alto .The service does leave more to be desired but just b/c they don't have enough waiters during lunch it seems like. I went to this place w/o Yelp (a rarity) and was not suprised to see the reveiws. If the service is upgraded this could be a solid 4 star place. The sushi itself wasn't great nor was it terrible.

  • Rachelle R.

Tried this place out on a whim. I actually thought it was Sushi TOMI (with good reviews) by mistake. It's okay, really. Not the worst I've ever had. My bf phrased it just about right. It's a "gotta get my sushi fix for cheap" type of restaurant. That being said, I probably wouldn't come back here again unless I got free dinner. But, I like my sushi fresh and delicious...so I would probably go somewhere else if I had to pay.

  • Lynn W.

The fish quality is better now then when they opened, but the service is always terrible. I feel like an invisible ghost there. Tonight I needed to ask for more water three times from different people walking by. They should know to have the water coming by on a regular basis with the soy sauce and all. Four people around me grabbed the water pitcher when it finally came, so it wasn't only me. Perhaps they don't speak English well-but how about at least SMILING to acknowledge that the guest is there and they have been heard? The only thing that keeps me coming back is that it is relatively easy to get in and out if you are a single person and love sushi. The prices are pretty reasonable too for Palo Alto.

Been back to visit at least once a month since my last review. So far so good! No complains at all. They did change their wait staff and sushi chef but I do not see any difference. Good Job all around.

I went to Sushi Tomo thinking oh it was going to be nice to have some sushi on my lunch break, but NOT ONLY WERE THE STAFF RUDE!!!!! BUT VERY SNOBBY AT THAT! I was ordering sushi to go and figured while I was waiting I would eat my edemamme and miso soup. So when I asked the lady if I could eat my soup and edemamme while I waited, she WALKED AWAY FROM ME WITHOUT ANY RESPONSE! I mean can I get a yes, a no a give me one minute? I will NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN AND I SUGGEST YOU NEVER GOING THERE BECAUSE THE SERVICE THERE IS GARBAGE AND A WASTE OF TIME AT THAT!

When it comes to sushi restaurants, turnover rate is the key to getting fresh fish. This is the case for Sushi Tomo. Sushi Tomo is one of the best deals in town - fresh fish, simple menu, low prices. I regularly order nigiri and find it to be of great quality. I have always had positive experiences with the staff - they are friendly and accommodating.

  • Julie D.

Today was my frist time having lunch here. We sat at the bar like we had many times over. I'm not the BIGGEST fan of sushi boats only because of the freshness factor. I was sorely disapointed today with the selection that was presented on the boats. Like a previous yelper mentioned, the sushi was "safe" meaning california rolls, salmon, tuna and edamame. I have been for dinner and i felt the selection was better. They had these incredible deep fried scalops in a tastey sauce, that we no where to be found. For a cheap sushi place they pass. Minus points for boring sushi on the boats.

  • Jennifer B.

I'm surprised this place is rated so badly. Normally I come here for the bento box which is a fantastic deal and is really good. I have had the beef terriyaki, didn't like it at all so I stick to the chicken. I have also had some of the sushi off the boats. Sometimes it can be really good, other times they don't refresh it with enough variety. However cost wise, and food quality wise, this is my standard place to come after work for Japanese food.

IF I could give this restaurant a BIG FAT ZERO I would! Let me start with the fact that the sushi is alright, but just alright. The SERVICE well specifically a waitress named LILY has to be the absolute worst waitress and its an insult to the customers of Sushi Tomo to have to deal with such incompetence. I've been there many times as its close to my work and she's never failed to be rude, obnoxious and totally worthless as far as waitress' are concerned. Today I found a hair in my rice, when I showed it to LILY she really insinuated that it was my hair stating that "We do not have anyone with gray hair here" while looking at my hair to search for grays. When I asked her to remove my plate as I was totally disgusted she rudely place my food in front of me to call over our waiter. WORST SERVICE EVER. They didn't offer to correct the bill or even offer to rectify the situation beyond asking me if I wanted another bowl of hairy rice. I'll never visit this establishment again.

If you asked me a year ago, I would have given them 4 stars. Lately their service has been awful and their rice has either been too hard or too soft for my liking. I've also been noticing that less and less people go there to eat. I do give it three stars because it's still a very quick place to grab sushi during your lunch break and for their yummy poki rolls. If you have more time to eat and want to spend more, I suggest Yuki Sushi.

    (3)
  • Julian G.

Sushi is OK, but the service stinks. Everyt time I needed my drink refilled I had to go get someone. It took 20 minutes to get the bill and get out, and that was only because I went to the front desk and wouldn't get out of the way. I would have complained to the manager but he wasn't anywhere to be found. The sushi is OK, nothing that stands out, but admittedly I didn't ask the guys to show their stuff. With mis-service like that I'm not going to gamble my money.

three stars, because not bad sushi for a very good price. this is no fancy-pants sushi joint, but it's great for a quick and casual dinner or take-out, although I wouldn't go for anything exotic or fancy sashimi. i live next door, so this is my place for a cheap sushi fix. my favorite items here are pretty tame, so i can't speak to the quality of the more adventourous items. (i love: avocado roll, inari, tekka roll, boston roll, tokyo roll, caterpillar roll, potsticker roll). i can get way more sushi than i can eat (eyes bigger than stomach--one of my issues) for $20, which is more than i can say about fuki-sushi across the street. one thing which is disappointing to me is that they have all these kirin ichiban signs all over, but they don't actually serve it. (i love kirin.)

  • Bruce J.

The sushi is a decent value, but the experience is absolutely lacking. Like previously mentioned, the employees make the customers feel like they are doing us a favor by serving us. I like to go to a restaurant and feel that my business is appreciated. Sushi Tomo's management has a lot to learn about that! There are enough choices whereby I can take my business elsewhere.

we went to dinner here on saturday and the sushi was right on...but then we returned for lunch on a wednesday and the sushi was mushy and watery. it tasted...defrosted. there was a strip of skin still left on one of my pieces of salmon sushi -- i didn't order salmon skiiiiiin. i'd prefer a place that offers good consistency.

Never crowded and really good. This is one of my favorites. However, the one in downtown Palo Alto is not as good, and does't have a bar.

  • Allen S.

I guess I can't really comment on the sushi here as I've almost never eaten it. I think once I had a spider roll and dragon roll (my standard fix of soft shell crab, unagi, and avocado). BUT, I am a BIG fan of their Salmon Terriyaki given that I live right by this place and it is literally my choice of dinner 1-2x a week. Yes, that is definitely a bit overkill I'll admit, but it's great b/c I always get it and they now know me by name and face. I love it. The best part was when I showed up to pick up my Salmon Terriyaki a few weeks back and gave them the money only to receive not just my food but a brand new Sushi Tomo T-shirt as well! Wow, they really know how to retain their customers. So if you're ever in the area look for the random Asian guy walking out of Sushi Tomo with a brand new T-shirt and you'll know that this review is trustworthy.

  • La C.

2 stars b/c the sushi was not too terrible but I've had better. I did take out and they said that I had to order the $8 or $9 minimum. I've never been to a place that forced me to order minimum for take out before??? Ridiculous. Will not be back anytime soon.

    (2)
  • Tina T.

For its price, Sushi Tomo is not a bad Japanese option. I've never gotten sick from the fish and generally like the rolls. The entrees are hit or miss though. I liked the oyako don I had once, but didn't like the beek sukiyaki I had last time. The beef was way too tough. Still, I'd go back.

3 of us went at about 8:30 pm on a Saturday night, thinking we'd just be lazy and eat off the sushi boats. Word of warning-if you go around that time, don't think you can just be satisfied w/sushi boat service as they weren't making anything new and shut it down by 9. We ate what we could, anyway, from the boats before they started ripping stuff off of it. Spicy tuna was the tastier of the options. Once the boats closed down, we were forced to order. I opted for the Monica roll, which boasted smoked calamari on top. The calamari was definitely deelish. The actual rolls it was on were ok. There seemed to be this base of some creamy (mayonnaise?) substance mixed with avocado and crab frequently used in the rolls. What makes this place stand out is the fact that they had two mini chocolate eclairs on a sushi boat. It was so unbelievable to me that I had to get them out of sheer morbit curiousity. I was hoping that they might have been some odd but delectable dessert fusion, but alas, just plain old mini chocolate eclairs that they probably bought wholesale from Costco. :(

Only had take out from here and it was pretty good. I had a poki spicy roll and the spicy tuna was a little oversauced for my tastes. Forget what else I had. Pretty decent sushi.

This place used to be so good when it first opened, Now I avoid it & tell everyone else to do the same. The service is terrible, the food quality is questionable, & they obviously don't want your business. With all the great sushi places in PA, I'm surprised they are still in business.

Good sushi and excellent service....I love hearing shouts of 'Irrashimase!' at a Japanese restaurant and the staff made sure I was never short of green tea. It lost points on the tempura which was oily and below average.

  • C W.

Their California roll was good, maybe the best I've ever had. But I'm surprised at the good reviews this place gets. I went there once and will never go back. Their maguro nigiri -- definitely the worst I've ever had anywhere. Even the supermarket beats what I had at this place. A dry (!), incredibly thin piece of tuna (I must admire the knife skills that can get the piece so thin) on a tiny lump of rice. I had the ebi nigiri -- again, an impossibly thin slice of shrimp on rice. Maybe the price is right, but you get what you pay for. Though, the roll was really good. Weird.

Great Sushi @ good price! sushi tomo keeps it fresh and is a clean joint unlike some of the other sushi spots in town. Terriyaki bento is great, also try the potsticker rolls or terriyaki salmon rolls.

    (4)
  • Chris R.

The sushi is inexpensive, but you get what you pay for. It took them 15-20 minutes to seat us (four people) even though we called ahead and made seating reservations. We went in the later evening (around 9pm) and the quality of the sushi was mediocre. They also brought out two of the meals (non-sushi) 5 or 10 minutes before the other two.

The food here is below average on a good day and they have no understanding of what customer service is. I would not return nor would I recommend this restaurant

The sashimi there is great. I get takeout about once every 1-2 weeks, always get the 9 piece salmon sashimi, the price is good and the pieces are HUGE. Salmon sashimi lovers must go check it for themselves! Not sure about the other food though never tried it lol.
